Location: Ericsson R&D center Massy, FranceEricsson is building a new R&D team in Massy, France, covering many cutting-edge technologies such as AI/ML, cloud, and 5G and beyond technologies. Within this new lab, Standards & Technology unit, is part of Business Unit Network’s global Standards & Technology organization. At Business Unit Networks, Standards & Technology secures technology leadership in Radio Access Networks (RANs) by actively driving New Concepts, Standardization, SW- and HW Research, Architecture and Testbeds. Technical focus includes 5G evolution, IoT, Digital twins, Automation / Machine Learning and Security.As a part of this new young and talented team of researchers, we are looking for the next year interns that will help us grow and engage in our activities on non-terrestrial networks (NTNs). Mobile communication over NTNs has drawn a lot of attention in both academia and industry, for example it has been a focus area in 3GPP since Rel-15. For the moment, attention is given to satellite communications and, more specifically, low earth orbit (LEO) deployments, which provide a relative better link budget compared to medium (MEO) and geostationary (GEO) earth orbit constellations.As frequency band is a scarce resource in wireless communications, NTN systems will encounter co-channel or adjacent frequency band sharing situation with existing terrestrial networks (TNs). As a result, interference from one network (known as aggressor) to the other (known as victim) becomes critical to the victim network’s system capacity, throughput performance of UEs especially in border region of the two networks. This internship will focus on the TN-NTN coexistence scenario where NTN is the victim and TN is the aggressor. The candidate will 1) build a TN-NTN coexistence simulation scenario of NTN with LEO constellation as the victim and TN as the aggressor, 2) evaluate the performance of the NTN system, 3) study and implement various interference mitigation methods applied to either NTN or TN, 4) propose and assess new approaches to improve NTN performance in TN-NTN co-existence scenario, possibly also compliant with 3GPP protocols. The expected results may lead to writing an academic publication or filling a patent for an invention.
