College of Biomedical and Life SciencesThis is an exciting opportunity to join a research team to develop the core person-focused outcomes needed to identify and assess the care needs of people living with glioma (the most common type of malignant brain tumour) and determine how to implement these in NHS settings.The successful candidate will work with Dr Stephanie Sivell on the mixed methods, multi-stage COMBaT project (Core Outcomes to Measure clinical needs in primary Brain Tumours) funded by Cancer Research Wales Brain Tumour Research Initiative (BATRI). To pursue excellence in research and to inspire others to do the same.Main Duties and Responsibilities

  • To undertake research within supportive and palliative care, specifically in relation to the COMBaT project (Core Outcomes to Measure clinical needs in primary Brain Tumours), e.g. by planning, preparing, setting up, conducting and recording the outcome of field work/desktop research including evidence reviews/questionnaires.
  • Actively participate within the research group, communicating and presenting research at meetings, through publications and other recognised avenues as appropriate, ensuring information is communicated to internal and external partners.
  • To contribute and support research publications and presentations as required.
  • To contribute and support research funding bids as required.
  • To analyse and communicate complex ideas, concepts and data using appropriate methods and packages.
  • To resolve issues and support colleagues in devising procedures required to ensure accurate and timely reporting.
  • To generate research output and contribute to the development of independent and original ideas as appropriate.
  • To provide support in research activities for undergraduate courses and research programmes and provide guidance to other members of staff within the research team.

The School of Medicine welcome the submission of CVs to accompany evidence of the job-based criteria.The Research Assistant will be based within the Marie Curie Research Centre (MCRC), Division of Population Medicine, Cardiff University. They will access the full methodological gateway of the Centre and Division including systematic review, qualitative, and consensus-generation expertise and will have direct support from the lead applicants at the MCRC at Cardiff University and the Birmingham Centre for Evidence and Implementation Science at the University of Birmingham. Core Outcome Set methodology will be used to provide a rigorous approach to the development of the essential domains of need and outcomes. With the support of the Research Assistant, and the lead and co-applicants, the Research Associate will be responsible for the oversee and lead on the management of the project, organising and facilitating the stakeholder scoping and consensus meetings and the generation of outputs from this, including a set of final core outcomes of importance to the identification and assessment of needs for use in NHS clinical settings. They will work directly with our Research Partners (RP) at every stage and support our RP impact strategy and utilise the collaborative expertise of the applicant group in person centred outcomes, co-design and data capture in NHS context to address the key elements of delivery described. Stakeholders will comprise people living with brain tumour (and specifically glioma), third sector representatives, Value in Health experts, NHS Digital Services and healthcare professionals specialising in neuro-oncology.The Research Assistant will: undertake an updated review of the qualitative literature; undertaking a secondary analysis of semi-structured interviews with patients and their informal carers; be responsible for populating the Delphi survey and its administration; support the analysis of, and contribute to, the analysis and dissemination of the final core outcome set; undertake an implementation workshop to identify the contextual requirements for collection of the final core outcomes within NHS Wales digital systems.Career PathwayResearchPerson SpecificationEssential CriteriaQualifications and Education * A degree in a relevant discipline, or equivalent experienceKnowledge, Skills and Experience * Knowledge of research methods and techniques within specialist field
