These degrees will be housed within the Institute of Interdisciplinary Studies. Opportunities to teach these degree courses are planned for Capilano University’s North Vancouver and Squamish campuses.About the roleThe Department of Geography at Capilano University invites applications for a regular full-time instructor. This is a unionized position with a teaching commitment of 8 course sections per academic year. Courses have a maximum of 35 students and will be delivered at our North Vancouver campus. The commitment level for this position will be met over three terms and will require the instructor to teach in the Fall, Spring, and Summer terms. This position will begin on 1 September 2025.The successful candidate will teach courses at the undergraduate level in the areas of physical landscapes, environmental geography, urban ecology and sustainable cities, with a focus on transportation and waste systems. Candidates may be asked to teach or develop other courses within their area of expertise. Duties include:
- Teach subjects and skills related to your area of expertise.
- Prepare and deliver courses, including lectures, seminars, labs and field trips.
- Evaluate student learning through assessments and marking.
- Provide support to students through weekly office hours and advising.
- Engage in ongoing professional development to maintain expertise and stay current with advancements and best practices in relevant fields of study.
Candidates are also expected to support the School of Social Sciences and Geography Department initiatives and provide service to Departmental, Faculty and University wide committees, including:
- Create and update course materials, outlines, and curriculum.
- Participate in meetings, committees, and events at the program, department, faculty, and university levels.
Experience, competencies & qualificationsPreference will be given to candidates with (or very near completion of) a PhD in Geography, Environmental Sciences or a closely related discipline. Candidates with a Master’s degree in these areas or a closely related discipline and demonstrated excellence in teaching will be considered. They will bring expertise, innovation, creativity and leadership in the required areas of teaching. The candidate should be experienced with a range of teaching practices, including lab-based learning, studio-learning, region-integrated experiential learning and be willing to work with the university’s work-integrated learning (WIL) initiative to develop community partnerships. We recognize that candidates may bring additional experience and qualifications other than those listed here; we encourage applicants to include any other relevant experiences, skills or perspectives that align with the role within your cover letter or curriculum vitae.Evidence of excellence in teaching will be demonstrated by teaching accomplishments, as outlined in the teaching statement and for short-listed candidates by an outstanding performance during their teaching demonstration.
