Job Summary

The Division of Ecological and Water Resources is seeking to hire a permanent full-time Hydrologist Specialist located in New Ulm or Manakto. This position ensures the protection of Minnesota public waters through the Department’s water management activities. The primary purpose of this position is to update the Public Waters Inventory (PWI) as an important tool for managing and regulating activities within public waters. The position also assists in various data collection, site visits, analysis and administrative duties associated with the Department’s responsibilities in managing public waters.

Responsibilities:

  • Conduct technical review of lakes, wetlands and watercourses to identify needed corrections to the Public Waters Inventory (PWI).
  • Participate and support public participation in the Public Waters Inventory (PWI) Update process.
  • Finalize updates to the Public Waters Inventory (PWI).
  • Conduct Regional public waters regulatory and management responsibilities and tasks as assigned.

This position has a flexible work arrangement and may be eligible to telework on a part-time basis which is subject to change. If approved, the employee would be required to complete an annual telework agreement. 

Minimum Qualification

Transcript Requirements:

  • Three hydrology qualifying courses in the areas of: Hydrology, Hydraulics, Hydrogeology/Groundwater Hydrology, Water Resources Engineering, Hydrologic Modeling, Watershed Management, Groundwater, Fluid Mechanics, fluvial geomorphology; OR
  • Two hydrology qualifying courses and two courses (or equivalent experience) in: Geology, Geomorphology, Geochemistry, Geography, Limnology, Erosion and Sediment Control, Environmental Engineering, Soils.

Additional qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering, Agricultural Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Geological Engineering, Hydrology, Forest Hydrology, Geography, Geology, Geophysics, Hydrogeology, Natural Resources, Environmental Studies, Soil Science, Water Resources Management, Hydraulics, Environmental Science, Earth Science, or related major.
  • Fundamental knowledge and understanding of hydrology, geology, hydraulics, engineering methods, surveying, drainage systems, hydraulic modeling, watershed management, and natural resource management.
  • Experience in geographic information system software analysis and display, including other geographic data used in desk top analyses of water or natural resources.
  • Knowledge in the underlying laws, rules, and policies that guide the Department’s water and related land use management programs and political processes.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships and provide training to all levels of government officials, the public, and other DNR employees.
  • Ability to evaluate technical reports, provide critical reviews, make decisions, and solve public water management topics.
  • Ability to organize and present expert testimony for Departmental programs and policies.
  • Considerable knowledge of coordinated resource management, ecosystem management, economics, law enforcement, and budget process.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced degree in Civil Engineering, Agricultural Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Geological Engineering, Hydrology, Forest Hydrology, Geography, Geology, Geophysics, Hydrogeology, Natural Resources, Environmental Studies, Soil Science, Water Resources Management, Hydraulics, Environmental Science, Earth Science, or related major.
  • Experience in the underlying laws, rules, and policies that guide the Department’s water and related land use management programs and political processes.

Additional Requirements

This position requires an unrestricted Class D Driver’s license with a clear driving record.
