Historic Property Documentation Internship – ONSITE – Fort Sumter and Fort Moultrie National Historical Park (FOSU) and Charles Pinckney National Historic Site

The Latino Heritage Internship Program seeks to engage young professionals in natural resource careers. Applicants must meet the following additional requirements:

  • Be a U.S. citizen or legal resident
  • Be between the ages of 18 and 30, or up to 35 if a veteran
  • Be a student enrolled in an accredited college or university, with a graduation date after the internship end date
  • Be willing to undergo a background check upon hiring
  • Have a valid driver’s license and a good driving record

Note: A personal vehicle is required for this position.

Position description

A Determination of Eligibility (DOE) is a decision by the Department of the Interior that a district, site, building, structure, or object meets the National Register of Historic Places criteria for evaluation. A DOE is required to better understand a structure’s full context, history of maintenance, historical integrity, and significance for potential inclusion on the National Register of Historic Places.

DOEs for the Fort Moultrie Visitor Center and the Liberty Square Unit of FOSU serve as baseline Section 110 surveys necessary for future resource protection, maintenance, and interpretive efforts. The intern will work directly with the park historian, museum curator, and archaeologist to access records, conduct site visits, research site histories, and draft DOE reports.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with Determinations of Eligibility (DOEs) for the Fort Moultrie Visitor Center and the Liberty Square Unit of FOSU
  • Collaborate with the park historian, museum curator, and archaeologist throughout the DOE process
  • Access and review archival records and documentation related to historic structures
  • Conduct site visits to assess historical context, integrity, and significance
  • Research site history, maintenance records, and historical integrity
  • Draft DOE reports in accordance with National Register of Historic Places criteria and Section 110 requirements

Qualifications

  • Relevant majors: Archaeology, History, Public History, Historic Architecture, Historic Preservation, or a related field
  • Coursework in U.S. Military History, South Carolina/Lowcountry History, or related subjects
  • experience in writing and editing
  • Experience with archival and database research
  • Interest in cultural resource management, conservation, preservation, and National Park Service stewardship
  • Exhibits FOSU/CHPI core values, including open communication, empathy, integrity, one-park-one-team mentality, resource stewardship, and respect
  • Adaptable, engaging, and eager to learn; able to work through mistakes in a highly collaborative environment
  • Detail-oriented and able to demonstrate verbal communication skills to ask questions, seek support, and interact with colleagues and professionals outside the Park Resource Management Division

  • Gain exposure to navigating a future career in cultural resource management
  • Learn about National Park Service management and enabling/guiding legislation

About the Site

The offices are located in the Lowcountry of South Carolina. Standard environmental conditions include hot, humid summers with frequent afternoon thunderstorms and occasional flooding. Tropical storms are possible from June to November. Grocery stores, gas stations, and medical offices are plentiful, all within a 10-minute drive.

Charleston County has a 5% Hispanic/Latino population, and there are no Hispanic/Latino majority neighborhoods in the area.
