Deliver critical, hands-on maintenance, repair, and construction services to ensure facilities and hatchery operations run efficiently statewide.

Leveraging expertise across multiple construction disciplines, you will maintain and enhance essential infrastructure, including water systems, hatchery buildings and bird predation prevention systems to directly supporting fish health, production, and workforce safety. 

What to Expect-
Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Construction and Maintenance Project Lead will, 

Project Leadership:

• Assist in the preparation, scheduling, and supervision of the work layout for the maintenance and construction at facilities, access sites and wildlife areas.
• Effectively communicate project scope and expectations to a crew by translating general work requirements into a prioritized plan for individual tasks and assignments.
• Conduct meetings to discuss daily milestones and safety precautions.
• Determine materials, personal protective equipment (PPE), equipment, and staff needed and ensure its availability.
• Continuously inspect completed work making sure it is up to code and specifications and initiates timely problem resolutions.
• Assist with the closeout of projects by compiling and reporting staff time, cost of materials, and activities performed, entering work order completion remarks, and submitting as-builts, when applicable.

Commercial Plumbing:

• Repair or replace high- and low-pressure supply lines and drainpipes.  Install and modify existing water intake, distribution and drainage systems and pipes.
• Operate excavation equipment and electronic utility locators to aid in the location of underground water lines and septic systems.

Heavy Construction Equipment Operation and Maintenance:

• Inspect, operate, and transport all types of heavy earthmoving equipment including but not limited to: commercial combination dump trucks and trailers, wheel loaders, dozers, track excavators, power wheelbarrows, boom trucks, backhoes, all-terrain forklifts, and personnel lifts in the execution of all phases of construction as relates to hatchery maintenance installation and repair tasks.
• Clear, remove, and transport mud and debris from on-site hatchery abatement ponds, intake structures, demolition projects and general construction tasks using excavators, boom trucks, backhoes, and dump trucks.
• Work around, expose and install sensitive buried utilities and alarm lines using backhoes and track excavators.

Mechanical and Metal Fabrication:

• Independently service and provide diagnostic functions on crowders, rotating belt screens, electronic rolling doors, winches, and predation structures.
• Layout, cut, assemble, and weld various hatchery components to modify, repair and improve safety, operation or improve fish production and health.

Carpentry:

• Independently construct and perform minor and major repairs to buildings, sheds, handrails, and various other structures from specification, plans, sketches, or instructions.
• Form, pour, and finish concrete.

Working Conditions: 

Work setting, including hazards: 

• Duties are performed at construction sites on hatchery and wildlife areas.
• Hazards include working on rough terrain, riverbanks, slippery slopes, confined and difficult to reach spaces, and working and driving in inclement weather conditions.
• Bend, stoop, squat, twist, push, pull, and lift 50 pounds repetitively when loading and unloading trucks or moving materials around project site.
• This position may involve working in or near water, including tasks that require navigating, negotiating, and performing duties related to water environments.
• Some tasks will involve sitting at a desk and working on a computer.

Schedule: Typically, Monday – Thursday 6:00 A.M. – 4:30 P.M. working 40 hours per week. The standard work schedule includes the potential for occasional evening or weekend work as needed

Travel Requirements: Statewide travel required 70-90% depending on season.

Tools and Equipment: Computers, cell phone, basic hand tools, power tools such as drills, cut off saws, circular saws, hydraulic punch, metal band saws, grinders, welders, cutting torch, plasma cutter, personnel lifts, power wheelbarrows, chainsaws, jack hammers and/or powered motors, trash pumps, portable generators, automotive equipment, pick-up trucks and trailers.

Customer Interactions: Frequent interactions varying between Federal, Local, Inter-Agency, and Intra-Agency customers and vendors.

Qualifications:

Required Qualifications: 

Option 1: All of the following (experience may be gained concurrently):

• Four (4) years of journey-level experience in two (2) or more of the following construction or building trades:
  • Heavy equipment operation
  • Commercial plumbing
  • Carpentry
  • Concrete
  • Similarly related field.
• Six (6) months of professional experience reading and interpreting blueprints, plans, and sketches
• Ability to estimate materials and time needed to complete jobs

    License/Certifications: 

• Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) endorsement with current Medical Examiner’s Certificate
• Valid Driver’s License

Option 2: All of the following (experience may be gained concurrently):

• Two (2) years as Maintenance Mechanic 3
• Six (6) months of professional experience reading and interpreting blueprints, plans, and sketches
• Ability to estimate materials and time needed to complete jobs

     License/Certifications: 

• Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) endorsement with current Medical Examiner’s Certificate
• Valid Driver’s License
