Fisheries Biologist III

Summary:

This position will work within the John Day Watershed Restoration Program located in John Day, Oregon and assist in the implementation of habitat restoration projects and monitoring efforts. The John Day Basin Office implements various conservation and restoration projects that target watershed and habitat recovery for anadromous fish throughout the John Day River Basin. This position requires the ability to manage multiple monitoring projects, strong communication skills, and a firm understanding of habitat requirements of anadromous salmonids in eastern Oregon/the Pacific Northwest. The selected candidate will lead the development and implementation of fisheries habitat monitoring projects which incorporate protocols for habitat surveys, fish monitoring (i.e. PIT-tagging of juvenile salmonids and snorkel surveys), vegetation surveys, macroinvertebrate collection, and topographic surveying

Responsibilities:

• Develop and lead all monitoring of conservation and restoration projects on private and public lands. These projects will include instream habitat improvements, channel restoration, riparian plantings, livestock management fencing, irrigation piping and efficiency, fish passage, and more.
• Oversee implementation of fisheries projects/studies; carry out assigned duties efficiently and ensure quality control of project implementation.
• Maintain accurate records through database updating, notebooks, activity logs, and data management.
• Maintain gear used daily and communicate needs for repairs/replacements with project biologists.
• Oversee report writing, including data analysis, to reflect progress and details of project work efforts.
• Supervise up to 3 monitoring biologists and/or technicians

Knowledge & Skills (Qualifications):

• Demonstrates the desire to pursue a career in natural resource related field.
• Is experienced in fish identification, sampling and collection techniques.
• Has supervisory experience.
• Is experienced in collecting, recording, performing QA/QC, analyzing, and communicating fisheries data.
• Has strong communication skills both written and verbal

Education and Experience (Required):

• A Batchelor’s degree in Fisheries or Natural Resource studies, plus at least 3 years of experience in fisheries or an adjacent field.
• Familiarity with Pacific Northwest salmonids, and their habitats.
• Must have a current Oregon Driver’s License, be able to pass a Drug Test, and a Background Check upon hiring. Ability to obtain drone pilot’s license upon hiring is desired.
• Ability to lift objects in excess of 50lbs, and ability to withstand several hours in hot and/or inclement weather.
• Applicant must be familiar with MS Office software tools. Ability to use GPS and tablets for data collection is strongly desired.
• Qualified individuals must have excellent people and communication skills and the ability to communicate needs to complete projects within given timeframes.
• Excellent organizational skills.

Other:

Applicant must be comfortable with frequent travel to nearby project sites, often independently in rural locations throughout the John Day River Basin. Some camping with the monitoring team is occasionally required at monitoring sites further away from the office.
