GENERAL description:  

The Wyoming Game and Fish Department is seeking two (2) twelve-month contract Fish Culture Specialists. One position will be located at the Clark’s Fork Fish Hatchery, and the other will support operations between the Ten Sleep Hatchery and the Wigwam Rearing Station.

Under supervision, incumbents will perform a variety of fish culture and facility maintenance duties. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, assisting with spawning operations, cleaning tanks, feeding fish, conducting sample counts and inventories, calculating feed requirements, and stocking fish. Positions will also assist other Department hatcheries as needed.

Additional duties include maintaining equipment such as pumps, lawn mowers, weed eaters, and pressure washers, as well as performing general upkeep of facility grounds and buildings.

These positions may participate in a rotating weekend schedule to ensure fish culture operations are monitored seven days per week.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:  The listed functions are illustrative only and are not intended to describe every function that may be performed in the job level.

  • Completing necessary fish culture duties that will include daily fish and egg monitoring activities, tank cleaning, fish feeding, egg, fry, and juvenile fish care, sampling, inventories, feed calculations, spawning, and fish stocking.
  • Maintenance to various pieces of equipment, the facility grounds, and buildings.
  • Working independently or as part of a team.
  • Effective written and oral communication skills.

Qualifications

PREFERENCES/**AGENCY REQUIREMENTS:

Preference may be given to those with any combination of training and experience equivalent to a bachelor’s degree in fisheries, wildlife management, biology, zoology, ichthyology, or a closely related field.

 **Must possess a valid driver’s license and be able to obtain a Commercial Driver’s License.

KNOWLEDGE: 

  • Principles, concepts, and practices of fish propagation and/or management.
  • Oral and written communications
  • Computers and various computer software.
  • Maintenance of small engines and lawn equipment.

PHYSICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Ability to operate various pieces of equipment, which may include 4WD vehicles, tractors, pumps, pressure washers, lawnmowers, weed eater, and chainsaw.
  • Some occasional lifting will be required.
  • Working outdoors in adverse weather conditions for prolonged time periods.
  • Responding to facility needs, day or night.

NOTES: 

  • FLSA: Non-exempt
  • On-site housing is provided for both positions at no expense to the employee and is a condition of employment.
  • If chosen for the position, successful applicants must pass a background check before being hired.
  • This is a 12 month contract position (At-Will Employee Contract) at the Clark’s Fork Fish Hatchery and a 12 month contract position (At-Will Employee Contract) at the Ten Sleep Hatchery/Wigwam Rearing Station.
  • The Clark’s Fork position will have a start date of June 1, 2026 with the contract being renewed on July 1, 2026 for another 12 months.
  • The Ten Sleep Hatchery/Wigwam Rearing Station position will have an approximate start date of July 6, 2026 and will end June 30, 2027.  The contract may be renewed for another 12 months on July 1, 2027.
