Field Technician II – Mass Audubon Coastal Waterbird Program (Piping Plovers, Terns, American Oystercatchers, Shorebirds)

Mass Audubon is seeking to fill seasonal Field Technician II positions to conduct research, monitoring, management, and protection of coastal birds and other natural resources. This is a primarily field-based position, with minimal office work for data management and offers opportunities to take on varied projects as needed. Multiple positions available across coastal Massachusetts, including Cape Cod, Martha’s Vineyard, Nantucket, South Shore and North Shore. Responsibilities 

  • Collect biological data on nesting, foraging and migrating species of coastal waterbirds including abundance and distribution of target species
  • Accomplish the wildlife management, protection, and education objectives of the Coastal Waterbird Program
  • Assist with sanctuary-based Coastal Waterbird Program staff throughout the region
  • Interact with beachgoers regularly to provide information regarding regulations and beach ecology; some formal outreach initiatives may be possible depending on location and capacity
  • Access sites via kayaks or small boats, if applicable
  • Assist in management of databases including abundance, productivity and behavioral data; create and maintain online maps for nesting and management activities
  • Assist in compilation of data for state plover, tern, and oystercatcher census forms and write summary reports for specific sites on results and management activities
  • Conduct research on special projects as directed
  • Assist with training and orientation of Field Technician I staff as needed

Must Haves 

  • At least 21 years of age
  • Demonstrated interest in wildlife management and/or biology through coursework, previous employment or volunteering
  • Demonstrated experience utilizing judgment in field-based wildlife research or management projects and have a strong attention to detail
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Must be able to work long hours outside in all weather conditions
  • Must be able to lift and carry up to 40lbs across varied and sandy terrain
  • Must be willing to work weekends, holidays, and irregular hours (dependent upon wildlife and weather)
  • Must have access to a personal vehicle for daily driving between sites
  • Must be available to start work on March 30 or April 13, 2026; applicants available after April 13, 2026 should apply for the Field Technician I position

Nice to Haves 

  • Kayaking and small boat-handling experience preferred
  • Prior experience in avian field research and management strongly preferred
  • Experience in behavioral data collection, band-reading, wildlife tracking, coastal wildlife management issues, and GIS mapping preferred

Compensation, Benefits and Perks
This position’s pay range is $18.50-$20.20/hour; actual salary will reflect level of experience and qualifications relative to position requirements. This position may be eligible for health insurance benefits. Shared staff housing may be available for rent in some locations. Housing is available on a first come, first serve basis. 

Work Schedule 

This position has two waves of start dates on March 30, 2026 and April 13, 2026. This position ends on August 14, 2026. Applicants available after April 13 should apply for the Field Technician I position. The schedule is typically 35-40 hours per week, 8:00am-4:00pm with some earlier days (6:00am-2:00pm) and later days (10:00am-6:00pm) required for special monitoring projects and training. Work on weekends and holidays is required (specifically Memorial Day and Fourth of July), with variable hours and schedule due to weather and site-specific requirements. Requests for a limited number of weekend days off may be considered. 

Other Requirements
Employees must successfully complete a CORI and SORI Background Check and a Motor Vehicle Record (if applicable) is required. Staff members must complete all designated training sessions throughout the season, as applicable to their responsibilities.
