Field Technician I – Mass Audubon Coastal Waterbird Program (Piping Plovers, Terns, American Oystercatchers, Shorebirds)

Mass Audubon is seeking to fill Field Technician I positions to support the research, monitoring, management, and protection of coastal birds and other natural resources. Field Technicians will be mentored by Mass Audubon staff in the monitoring and management of Piping Plovers, Least and Common Terns, and American Oystercatchers. This is a field-based position with potential for minimal office work for data management assistance and offers opportunities to take on varied projects as needed. Multiple positions are available across coastal Massachusetts, including on Cape Cod, Martha’s Vineyard, Nantucket, South Shore and North Shore. Housing options may be available depending on location and availability. Start date is flexible through the month of May with latest start possible by May 22, 2026. For more information, visit www.massaudubon.org/cwp.

Responsibilities 

• Collect biological data on nesting, foraging and migrating species of coastal waterbirds including abundance and distribution of target species
• Accomplish the wildlife management, protection, and education objectives of the Coastal Waterbird Program
• Assist with sanctuary-based Coastal Waterbird Program staff throughout the region
• Interact with beachgoers regularly to provide information regarding regulations and beach ecology; some formal outreach initiatives may be possible depending on location and capacity
• Access sites via kayaks or small boats, if applicable
• Conduct research on special projects as directed

Must Haves 

• At least 18 years of age and have a strong interest in wildlife management and conservation biology
• Applicants should have good communication (oral, written) skills
• Must be able to work long hours outside in all weather conditions and be able to lift and carry up to 40lbs across varied and sandy terrain
• Must be willing to work weekends, holidays, and irregular hours (dependent upon wildlife and weather)
• Must have access to a personal vehicle for daily driving between sites

Nice to Haves 

• Preference will be given to applicants pursuing a career/degree in wildlife biology/management, ecology, zoology, environmental science, biology, or related field, however all are encouraged to apply
• Kayaking experience or comfort on boats preferred

Compensation, Benefits and Perks
This position’s pay range is $16.75-18.00/hour; actual salary will reflect level of experience and qualifications relative to position requirements. This is not a benefits eligible position. Shared staff housing may be available for rent in some locations. Housing is available on a first come, first serve basis. 

Work Schedule 

Start date is flexible through the month of May with latest start possible by May 22, 2026. This position ends on August 7, 2026. The schedule is typically 35 hours per week, 8:00am-4:00pm with some earlier days (6:00am-2:00pm) and later days (10:00am-6:00pm) required for special monitoring projects and training. Work on weekends and holidays is required (specifically Memorial Day and Fourth of July), with variable hours and schedule due to weather and site-specific requirements. Requests for a limited number of weekend days off may be considered.

Other Requirements
Employees must successfully complete a CORI and SORI Background Check and a Motor Vehicle Record (if applicable) is required. 

Staff members must complete all designated training sessions throughout the season, as applicable to their responsibilities.
