S&ME’s Environmental Services team in Chattanooga, Tennessee are seeking motivated and passionate entry-level to experienced Environmental Professionals ready to take on meaningful work and grow professionally.

As an Environmental Professional, you will support environmental investigation, compliance remediation, and brownfield redevelopment projects as well as commercial property due diligence efforts through Phase I and Phase II Environmental Site Assessments (ESAs). This role requires the Application of environmental regulations through a combination of education and professional experience. Staying current with industry standards, emerging technologies, and best practices is essential to producing high-quality, clear, and defensible deliverables that meet both client and regulatory requirements.

Your Day-to-Day:

This position combines fieldwork, anticipated to range between 30-75% of your time, technical analysis and report writing, and project coordination across environmental site investigations, brownfield redevelopment, commercial due diligence, hazardous building materials, and broader environmental evaluations.

Field Responsibilities

  • Support Phase I and II ESA’s, environmental investigations, and remediation projects
  • Environmental observations during site redevelopment activities
  • Collect environmental media samples (soil, groundwater, soil gas, etc.) for chemical analysis and field screening data
  • Lead and coordinate field investigations, supervise drilling and utility subcontractors, and conduct field testing and sampling to support site characterization and remedial decision-making
  • Record clear and concise field reports and other documentation, including chain-of-custody forms

Office Responsibilities

  • Review and interpret field and laboratory environmental data, including comparison to applicable federal and state regulatory standards
  • Data tabulation and management
  • Graphical data presentation
  • Technical report writing

What You Bring:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Geology, or a related field
  • 0-5 years of relevant geo-environmental experience, including consulting, regulatory, or industry roles
  • Tennessee Professional Registration (e.g., Professional Geologist) or the intent to obtain, a plus
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite
  • Attention to detail, creative, and critical thinking
  • OSHA HAZWOPER 40 Hour Certification, a plus
  • Familiarity with ArcGIS and/or AutoCAD, a plus
  • Experience with federal and/or state environmental regulations, a plus

Compensation will be based on experience and industry certifications

Working Conditions and Physical Demands:

This role involves hands-on work in outdoor environments, and with Company-provided Personal Protection Equipment (PPE), you’ll need to be comfortable with:

  • Working outdoors in varying weather conditions
  • Walking over rough, uneven terrain and standing (potentially up to 12 hours a day)
  • Routinely lifting and carrying 40-50lbs (field/laboratory samples and equipment)
  • Working outside of normal business hours and traveling (typically out-of-town and/or overnight) as project needs arise, to include weekends and overtime work
