position Summary

We are seeking an Environmental Inspector with experience in stormwater, erosion and sediment control, and environmental compliance to support construction activities along approximately 17 miles of trail reconstruction. This role ensures construction compliance with environmental permits and protection requirements within sensitive forest and recreational areas.

What You’ll Do

• Inspect construction activities for compliance with approved Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plans (SWPPP), erosion and sediment control plans, and environmental permits.
• Monitor contractor compliance with environmental protection measures, including waterways, wetlands, and disturbed areas.
• Identify and report environmental incidents, deficiencies, or non-compliant conditions immediately.
• Prepare daily environmental inspection reports and documentation using required USDA Forest Service forms.
• Coordinate with the COR, CO, and engineering staff regarding environmental issues and corrective actions.
• Verify proper implementation of mitigation measures and restoration activities.
• Attend site meetings and safety briefings as required.

What is Required:

• Minimum 3-5 years of environmental inspection experience on infrastructure or linear construction projects.
• Experience with stormwater management, erosion and sediment control, and environmental compliance inspections.
• Knowledge of federal and state environmental regulations applicable to construction projects.
• Strong attention to detail and documentation skills.
• Ability to work outdoors in varying weather and terrain conditions.

Physical Demands

The incumbent in this position can typically expect to sit and use his/her hands to handle and feel for more than 1/3 of the day. He/she can expect to stand or walk for more than 2/3 of the day. Talking and listening are also expected for more than 2/3 of the day. The ability to climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl, or reach with arms will be needed for less than 2/3 of the day.

This position requires that the incumbent be able to lift items up to 70 pounds on an infrequent basis.

The incumbent in this position should have clear vision at 20 inches or less. He/she should be able to view various reports and forms as well as information displayed on a computer monitor and have the ability to distinguish between different colors. Depth perception, peripheral vision, the ability to focus, and the ability to see from a distance are also necessary.
