Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory is hiring a Senior/ Principal Energy Monitoring & Efficiency Engineering Associate within the NERSC division.
This role oversees the ongoing monitoring and optimization of energy performance for facilities and cooling systems that support NERSC HPC operations. The position will collaborate with the LBNL Energy Manager (Sustainable Berkeley Lab Office) to help meet LBNL & University of California energy and water efficiency goals while maintaining ongoing forecast models of NERSC energy and water demand. The role is also responsible for optimizing the Shyh Wang Hall (Building 59) Building Management System (BMS) control systems and engaging in Ongoing Commissioning (OCx) activities designed to maintain resource efficient operations. Lastly, this position leverages efficiency expertise as needed to ensure future Building 59 upgrades and construction projects are designed and implemented with NERSC performance requirements and specification input.

You will:
-
Identify and implement Energy Efficiency (EE) system improvements and performance monitoring support for NERSC Computer Room general IT and High-Performance Computing (HPC) systems.
-
Collaborate with NERSC Groups on emerging HPC power management methods, providing operations energy efficiency and power demand savings opportunities.
-
Continue to expand and improve our in-house capabilities to manage and improve the building 59 ALC Building Management System software program (Automated Logic Controls) systems, and to maintain a governing Sequence of Operations (SOO) document.
-
Provide energy cost and system actual power performance data support as needed to NERSC management the LBNL Directorate (via SBL) as needed.
-
Provide support and user collaboration with the System Management & Software group as needed for OMNI (Operations Monitoring and Notification Infrastructure) system improvements, deployment and outreach activities.
-
Work in close collaboration with the Operations Technology Group on maintaining effective Operational Data Analytics capabilities and tools designed to deliver resilient and efficient NERSC Computer Room operations.

Collaborate with the BIG Senior Data Center Engineer on the continued development and deployment of NERSC Data Center Infrastructure Management (DCIM) tools.
In Addition, Senior Monitoring & Efficiency Engineering Associate:
-
Act as a technical representative for NERSC to Sustainable Berkeley Lab (SBL), supporting participation in regular OCx reviews within monthly or quarterly NERSC EE meetings, as needed.

Serve as the technical representative for NERSC as part of the Energy & Water Management System – ISO 50001 (https://iso50001.lbl.gov) team, with active participation in regular meetings and prescribed Review Audits (internal and 3rd party) as needed.
-
Contribute to the publication and presentation of NERSC energy and water management technical details at HPC related conferences, workshops or other outreach channels within the high-performance computing community.

Provide technical expertise in energy and water efficiency to support the planning of future facility and cooling systems for future HPC systems and potentially quantum computing systems (Doudna and NERSC-11).

Exercise judgment within generally defined practices and policies in selecting methods and techniques for obtaining solutions.
-
Contribute to the development of technical organization goals and objectives.
In Addition, Principal Monitoring & Efficiency Engineering Associate:

Serve as primary NERSC representative to Sustainable Berkeley Lab (SBL), responsible for active participation in regular OCx reviews within monthly or quarterly NERSC EE Meetings as needed.

Requirements:

Bachelor’s degree in energy/resources engineering, or related field and a minimum of 5 years of related professional technical experience.
-
Demonstrated proficiency with the review, management, maintenance and logic coding of Building Management & Control Systems.
-
Demonstrated experience in working independently to conduct building energy and water consumption analyses.
-
Working familiarity with end-use efficiency technologies and associated engineering economics, and the ability to translate these principals into technical performance models.
-
Strong familiarity and understanding of data center operations and facilities support best practices.
-
Demonstrated ability to supervise junior staff and subcontractors.
In Addition, Principal Monitoring & Efficiency Engineering Associate:

Bachelor’s degree in energy/resources engineering or related field and a minimum of 6-8 years of related professional technical experience.
-
Demonstrated proficiency with the review, management, maintenance, and logic coding of Building Management & Control Systems at a program or team level.
-
Advanced working familiarity with end-use efficiency technologies and associated engineering economics, with the ability to define and guide technical performance models for NERSC-wide systems.

Demonstrated experience leading and coordinating technical projects across multidisciplinary teams.
-
Ability to provide subject matter expertise (SME) and strategic guidance on facility and HPC infrastructure efficiency initiatives.
Desired qualifications and skills/knowledge:

Graduate degree in energy/resources engineering, or related field.

Demonstrated experience in a research environment and working within innovative R&D projects.

Proficiency with Automated Logic Inc and WebCTRL building management systems

Advanced knowledge and understanding of BACnet, ARCnet and Modbus communication protocols

Experience with commercial building energy modeling tools such as Modellica, EnergyPlus (OpenStudio), DOE-2.

Familiarity or working understanding of CAD and or Building Information Modeling tools such as Autodesk Revit, Microstation, Revizto, Sketchup, etc.

Working knowledge of Linux commands, Python, JavaScript, JSON and scripting tools such as MetricsQL (VictoriaMetrics), PromQL, Regex, etc.

Working knowledge of commercial building HVAC mechanical systems.

Working knowledge of commercial building controls hardware and logic coding methods.

Ability to resolve complex issues in creative and effective ways and derive technical solutions in a collaborative environment to meet end user requirements or needs.

Salary Range:

The expected salary for the Senior Energy Monitoring & Efficiency Engineering Associate position is $113,800- $139,100, which fits into the full salary of $101,100- $170,700 depending upon the candidate’s skills, knowledge, and abilities. This includes education, certifications, and years of experience.

The expected salary for the Principal Energy Monitoring & Efficiency Engineering Associate position is $137,900- $168,600, which fits into the full salary of $122,600- $206,900 depending upon the candidate’s skills, knowledge, and abilities. This includes education, certifications, and years of experience.
