What you’ll doThe Employment Counsel will report to the Associate General Counsel (Global Labor and Employment) and will advise stakeholders across the business on a wide range of employment and labour legal matters, with a focus on legal support in the United Kingdom and across the EMEA region. The successful candidate will provide both advice and counselling as well as employment-litigation support as needed to enable the execution of the company’s commercial strategies by supporting people-related legal needs.As a key member of the Viasat Legal team, the successful candidate will provide legal advice on all aspects across Viasat’s employment and labour legal needs and have the ability to practically and thoughtfully support the People & Culture (HR) (“P&C”) team and strategically influence business stakeholders at all levels.The individual will draw on their extensive legal experience to support the company in its approach to handling complex employment/labour legal matters, litigation, and to mitigate risk.
The day-to-day

• Provide legal support to the business areas and P&C covering all areas of employment/labour law, with a particular focus on the labour laws in the UK and throughout EMEA.
• Provide advice and strategy recommendations on a wide range of employment topics including hiring, promotions, performance management, disciplinary matters, grievances, location/entity management, terminations, reorganizations, contingent worker management, sick leave, working time regulations, and other areas relating to employment law.
• Serve as a subject matter expert on relevant collective bargaining agreements and related representative body matters.
• Draft and review of a wide range of employment related documents (employment contracts, agreements, contingent worker agreements, compensation letters, etc.).
• Design relevant policies, implementation and advice, litigation support, and management of outside counsel activities as necessary including but not limited to establishing effective business and legal strategy to address litigation and other operations and company needs.
• Advise on pertinent regulations and emerging employment law trends, including in the areas of employment and labour compliance and related regulations including those governing pay transparency and Artificial Intelligence.
• Support Viasat’s Privacy team as needed regarding compliance with data protection laws in relation to employee data under applicable laws across the region.
• Advise and support on corporate transactions involving employee matters and applicable regulations including TUPE and analogous laws.
• Provide advice and oversee as appropriate employment litigation and related disputes, including cost-effective management of outside counsel.

What you’ll need

• Be a qualified lawyer in the UK or relevant common-law jurisdiction.
• Minimum 3 – 5 years’ PQE gained at leading law firms and/or in-house.
• Proven experience working within a geographically dispersed legal team, with a preference for experience working with a U.S. based legal team.
• Significant experienced in employment/labour work.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills to effectively interact with stakeholders at all levels of the organization.
• Collaborative team player with flexibility to align with colleagues in different time zones.
• Highly responsive to internal clients and business stakeholders
• Proven negotiation skills.
• Impeccable attention to detail and strong written work product.
• Pragmatic, commercial approach to advising internal clients.
• Ability to work proactively, independently, and reliably in a fast-paced environment and handle multiple assignments simultaneously.
• Ability to think practically when considering risks and be solution-oriented with advice.
• Willingness to handle matters outside primary area of expertise.
• Strong analytical capabilities and judgment.
• Good common sense.

• Telecommunications/TMT experience is a plus but not essential
• Experiencing supporting or working in a global company or supporting a global business with employees across multiple jurisdictions.
