Ecological Strike Team Crew Member

The Allegan jobshiringnearme.org District is seeking to hire two (2) Ecological Strike Team Crew Members to assist with invasive species management and restoration projects across Allegan County. Crew members will work under the direction of the Restoration Coordinator on invasive species survey and treatment, native seed collection, and more. Invasive species removal methods will vary from mechanical removal to chemical treatment using appropriate herbicides. Crew members will participate in hands-on learning and become successful at plant identification, invasive species treatment, equipment maintenance, as well as other specialized restoration and natural resource skills.

This is a new position at the Allegan jobshiringnearme.org District funded by local millage dollars. The Allegan jobshiringnearme.org District is a unique unit of local government that utilizes state, federal and private sector resources to solve local conservation problems. We are dedicated to helping all land users wisely manage the natural resources of Allegan county. 

WORKING LOCATION AND CONDITIONS 

The position will be based at the Allegan jobshiringnearme.org District Office in Allegan, Michigan. Workdays are  generally Monday-Friday. Occasional evenings or weekends may be required for workshops, meetings, or  major events. This a field-based position, with the strike team working outside 75% of the time throughout the season. The incumbents will work in a wide range of conditions, including traversing uneven terrain or wetlands, and unideal weather such as rain or high heat. The incumbents are expected to hike long distances, use pesticides, hand tools, and power tools, and lift up to 50 pounds without mechanical assistance. 

COMPENSATION 

The Ecological Strike Team Crew Member is a part-time, seasonal, hourly position with a base pay of $18/hour. The incumbents are expected to work a minimum of 3 days per week, with the potential for an increase in hours dependent on client demand. Total hours worked each week may vary due to weather conditions and workload. This is a seasonal position generally running from June 1st to August 28th. RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES

• Survey for target invasive species on foot or using vehicles.
• Treat invasive species using various methods, including backpack sprayers, cut-stump treatment, brush cutting, and handpulling.
• Follow protocols for decontamination, pesticide safety, and equipment safety.
• Professionally communicate with clients and provide required documentation.
• Clean, maintain and keep track of equipment and supplies.
• Use ArcGIS, FieldMaps, Survey123, and/or Google Sheets to accurately record data while out in the field or in the office.
• Identify native plant populations and collect native plant seeds on public and private lands.
• Assist with seed processing activities.
• Maintain thorough and accurate records such as client data and pesticide Application records.
• Stay up-to-date on pesticide and invasive species regulations and best practices for invasive species management.
• Obtain and/or maintain Michigan Commercial Pesticide Applicator certification in Categories 2, 3A, 3B, 5 and/or 6 for the duration of employment (paid for by employer if needed)
• Assist with educational and outreach events as needed.
• Diverse activities such as tree planting, trail building, and surveying in kayaks may also be a responsibility of this position, contingent upon capacity and grant awards.
• Perform other essential activities as required by grant agreements or as assigned by the Restoration Coordinator or Executive Director.

QUALIFICATIONS 

Required: 

• Demonstrated interest in natural resource management, biology, ecology, or invasive species removal. Examples include volunteer experience or progress towards a relevant degree or certification.
• Basic understanding of and interest in plant identification.
• Excellent social and interpersonal skills; able to work effectively with diverse clientele.
• Strong time management and organizational skills.
• Ability to work well in a team.
• Ability to obtain commercial pesticide applicators license.
• Willingness and ability to work in adverse weather / outdoor conditions.
• Proficiency with Microsoft and Google office programs.
• Must have a reliable personal vehicle to get to work and use for work activities when a District vehicle is unavailable. Personal vehicles are not expected to be used for restoration work, but  may be used for meetings or events.

Preferred: 

• Bachelor’s degree, in progress or completed, in a related field (natural resource management, biology, ecology, wildlife, forestry, etc.)
• Possess a Michigan Commercial Pesticide Applicator certification (Categories 2, 3A, 3B, 5 and 6 are ideal).
• Experience using ArcGIS software (Pro, Survey123, Fieldmaps).
• Experience doing data collection in the field.
• Proficiency in plant identification, both invasive plants and native Michigan plants.
• Experience with herbicide treatment and backpack sprayers.
• Experience using small machinery and hand tools.
