This position requires collaboration with Members of Council and their staff to enhance effective community communications and ensure alignment with the City of Brampton’s Strategic Plan and the Mayor’s goals and objectives. The Director of Communications will oversee strategic messaging, issues management, advocacy support, and public engagement initiatives to advance the Mayor’s and Council’s shared priorities. A strong understanding of Brampton’s stakeholder landscape and the ability to build consensus and partnerships with diverse groups will be essential in enhancing communications through strategic collaborations.Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Leadership and Strategic Oversight:
  • Provide strategic direction and oversight for the development, implementation, and evaluation of all communications initiatives for the Office of the Mayor.
  • Ensure consistent messaging and alignment with corporate strategies, the Mayor’s priorities, and Council’s objectives.
  • Foster collaboration and support effective communications across the Mayor’s Office, Members of Council, and their respective staff teams.
  • Content Development and Messaging:
  • Oversee the creation and dissemination of high-quality communications products, including speeches, press releases, presentations, columns, and public statements.
  • Develop and refine key messages and communication strategies for public engagement, media relations, and government advocacy.
  • Public and Community Relations:
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with media, community groups, businesses, and key stakeholders to enhance the Mayor’s and Council’s visibility and accessibility.
  • Serve as the primary communications advisor to the Mayor, providing insights on community relations and public perceptions.
  • Develop and finalize a quarterly print newsletter to update residents on key initiatives and achievements.
  • Government Relations/Intergovernmental Affairs:
  • Provide communications guidance, agenda review, and advocacy support for intergovernmental affairs initiatives on behalf of the Mayor.
  • Support the Mayor’s participation in organizations and boards, including but not limited to: Region of Peel; Association of Municipalities of Ontario (AMO); Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM); Ontario Big City Mayors (OBCM); and other boards and commissions to which the Mayor may be appointed.
  • Develop briefing materials, messaging, and strategies to effectively communicate the City of Brampton’s priorities and initiatives to other levels of government.
  • Collaborate with internal departments and external stakeholders to support the Mayor’s intergovernmental advocacy efforts.
  • Issues Management and Advocacy:
  • Collaborate with the City’s Strategic Communications division to identify and address emerging issues, ensuring timely and effective responses.
  • Partner with the Government Relations and Strategic Communications divisions to develop advocacy campaigns, stakeholder outreach plans, and government relations strategies.
  • Stakeholder Collaboration:
  • Build consensus and partnerships with Brampton’s diverse stakeholder groups, including residents, businesses, community organizations, and other levels of government, to enhance communications through strategic collaborations.
  • Work closely with Members of Council and their staff to develop and execute cohesive communications strategies that address local and city-wide priorities.
  • Digital and Social Media Oversight:
  • Oversee the Mayor’s digital communications channels, including social media platforms, the Mayor’s webpage, and multimedia content creation.
  • Develop innovative digital campaigns and evaluate their effectiveness in reaching target audiences.
  • Plan, create, and distribute a monthly digital newsletter to keep residents and stakeholders informed about updates and events.
  • Event Planning and Coordination:
  • Direct the planning and execution of high-profile events, announcements, and ceremonies initiated by the Mayor’s Office and Mayor’s involvement in announcements by other levels of government.
  • Manage students to assist with Mayor events.
  • Ensure events reflect the City of Brampton’s vision, values, and strategic goals

9. Other Duties:

  • Serve as spokesperson for the Mayor when required, addressing media inquiries and public concerns.
  • Provide support for additional projects and initiatives as directed by the Mayor.

QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS:Education and Experience:

  • Completion of post-secondary education in communications, public relations, journalism, or a related field.
  • Extensive experience in public relations, marketing, and event planning, with a strong preference for experience in municipal or public sector communications.
  • Proven leadership experience managing teams and delivering complex, multi-stakeholder projects.

Skills and Competencies:

  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to distill complex issues into clear and compelling messages.
  • Political acumen and the ability to navigate sensitive issues with tact, diplomacy, and confidentiality.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, social media platforms, website management, and multimedia content creation tools.
  • Strong organizational and project management skills, with the ability to balance competing priorities and meet tight deadlines.
  • In-depth knowledge of Brampton’s stakeholder landscape and the ability to build partnerships that strengthen community communications and align with city priorities.
