Job Summary
The Director, Gas Operations drives best-in-class Safety Culture, leads Operational Effectiveness initiatives to improve Operational performance, and drives Simplicity and Customer focus by assuring Operations is Brilliant in the Basics. The Director will develop clear strategic initiatives to improve Operational Performance through optimizing resource allocation, Compliance, Safety First, Customer focus, Employee Development through mentoring and coaching. Ensures that efforts are in accordance with all applicable company and regulatory requirements while ensuring safe, reliable service to customers in an efficient manner.
Essential Functions
- Champions a culture of Safety Leadership and a Goal Zero Mindset with Customer Focus
- Ability to ‘Make Safety Personal’ and demonstrating “We Care” to build a Safety Culture that incorporates Safety in everything we do
- Advocates ‘Barrier Thinking’ through championing Hazard Recognition and inserting Barriers to prevent hazards from becoming Top Events
- Supports Damage Prevention through sharing of good excavation practices and creates a Learning Mindset through Learning from experience
- Create an environment that encourages disclosure, shares Near-Misses, and mutual accountability for safety
- Ensure operations performance targets and OKRs such as Productivity, Efficiency, and Utilization are achieved or exceeded through the successful leverage of Operating Dashboards and the execution of annual work and operating plans
- Ensure compliance with all local, state and federal regulatory requirements
- Encourages Assurance programs that improve proficiency and close knowledge gaps to provide best-in-class customer service, pipeline safety, reliability and compliance
- Accountable for the productive use of both capital and O&M dollars
- Support and enhance customer service to achieve top-tier customer satisfaction and brand reputation
- Review and lead the development of relevant policies and procedures related to the business operations functions to fulfill organizational objectives
- Build and maintain strong relationships across the leadership team to align goals and missions across multiple business functions
- Works closely with cross departmental teams to identify, recommend, and implement new processes, technologies, and systems to streamline organizational processes and improve the use of resources
- Champion and support NiSource DEI initiatives and values, leverages I&D for business improvement
- Proactively develops direct reports and other key leaders to ensure strong succession and bench strength
- Other duties as assigned
Required Qualifications For position
- Extensive field experience in oil or gas distribution or transmission operations programs and practices, or related programs in parallel industries, including 5 years’ leadership management experience and proven record for developing team members
- Proven ability to drive strategic direction
- Possess a comprehensive understanding of methods, techniques and skills in the operations and maintenance of natural gas pipelines
- Proven ability to plan, organize and effectively manage a large operations organization. Requires continuous availability to manage a 24×7 operation
- Ability to develop rapport and trust with others and take action to build strategic relationships to achieve business goals
- Effective analytical, problem-solving and decision-making skills.
- Ability to make quick and practical operations decisions in limited time frames without jeopardizing employee and public safety
- Demonstrated ability to work with colleagues in a fast-moving environment, supervise multiple projects and take ownership, mentor, grow and lead a team
- Strong communication and negotiation skills, and business acumen
- Understanding of budgeting processes and ability to take decisions to work within budgets
- Demonstrated knowledge of the philosophy and process of Continuous Improvement
- Possess personal qualities of integrity, credibility, and commitment to Company’s mission
- Ability to travel approximately 25% to 50%
Preferred Additional Qualifications for Position
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college
- Master’s degree highly preferred in Business Administration, Economics, Engineering, Environmental or a related field.
- Experience in leading a Field Operations or System Operations function or territory
- Demonstrated ability to provide oversight, leadership and direction in the overall management of Gas Operations

Salary Range*:
$160,100.00 – $240,100.00
*The salary offered to a candidate is based on several factors including but not limited to the candidate’s skills, job-related knowledge, and relevant experience, as well as internal pay equity.
