About the Job

Overview:
The Minnesota Geological Survey (MGS) creates comprehensive geologic maps and associated databases to support management of water and mineral resources across the state. This position focuses on the Application of machine Learning methods to introduce and/or improve efficiencies in daily MGS workflows. A second focus of this position is to improve quality control on our databases by improving methods to identify database errors. This includes but is not limited to cross-checking records for missing values, inconsistencies between fields (e.g. differences between Public Land Survey Coordinates, addresses and digital locations; inconsistencies in depth cased and depth drilled fields, static water levels and stratigraphic codes).
Work for this position will be completed in office settings and working remotely and will be performed both independently and under direct supervision of a geologist and senior staff. We are seeking a highly motivated individual to bring their unique experience and perspective to our research community.

Qualifications

Minimum/Essential Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Data Science or related field, or education and work experience in geology totaling at least four years (such as an associate’s degree and two years of experience).

  • Demonstrated ability to write and assemble Python code and/or other platform-independent programing language.

  • Demonstrated ability to incorporate Large Language Models and/or other machine-learning (AI) tools into application code.

  • Demonstrated attention to detail and accuracy

  • Experience in Microsoft office products (Excel, Word)

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience using the County Well Index database

  • Familiarity with the geology of Minnesota

Physical and Environmental Requirements:

  • Work in an office setting daily

  • Licensed and able to drive vehicles

Work Environment

Most of the work for this position is performed in an office setting which is located off-campus near University Ave and HWY 280 in St. Paul. Up to 40% of work can be done remotely (work from home).

About the Department

The Minnesota Geological Survey is a research and service arm of the Newton Horace Winchell School of Earth Sciences at the University of Minnesota. It investigates the geology of Minnesota and provides basic public information on the geology of the state. The Survey works with state, county, and regional offices to set up geologic databases and provide technical guidance for water resource planning, land management and mineral exploration policy, energy system development, and other planning and resource management activities.
