About GCRI

The Guam Coral Reef Initiative (GCRI) is a program of the Guam Department of Agriculture’s Division of Aquatic and Wildlife Resources. GCRI’s goal is to provide a comprehensive program for the conservation and management of Guam’s coral reef ecosystems. GCRI’s work includes environmental restoration projects, management planning, ecological monitoring, disaster response, and education/outreach.

Job description

The Guam Coral Reef Initiative (GCRI) is seeking applicants for a Coral Reef Education & Outreach Coordinator. The Coordinator will perform the following duties:

  • Coordinate the Eyes of the Reef (EOR) program for Guam, including hosting classroom and in-water trainings, updating existing and developing new training modules, updating the EOR website and social media pages, and producing educational materials.
  • Monitor EOR reports and provide updates to relevant partners and community members.
  • Create an EOR certification program to formally recognize the contributions of EOR volunteers.
  • Work with partners to provide snorkel/swim clinics and first-time guided snorkel events to the local community.
  • Develop snorkel safety protocols and SOPs for public snorkel/volunteer events.
  • Incorporate identified best strategies in ocean-related curriculum and work with local educators to engage students in marine science.
  • Develop place-based learning materials, such as virtual field trips, that highlight Guam’s natural resources and introduce students to career opportunities in marine science.
  • Conduct coral reef outreach and education at a variety of events and for a wide range of audiences, including school visits, village fiestas, agency outreach events, etc.
  • Participate in working groups and partnerships related to general coral reef management.
  • Create social media posts, website pages, and other digital outreach materials related to coral reefs.
  • Collaborate with other GCRI staff and partners to develop effective outreach materials for projects related to coral reef management and restoration, marine invasive species prevention, watershed management, water quality management, etc.
  • Other duties as assigned.

This is a full-time position with an anticipated start date in August 2026, but start dates are flexible. This position is funded for two years, and additional funding may become available to extend the position. This position is expected to be 70% office/telework and 30% fieldwork. The Coral Reef Education & Outreach Coordinator will be employed at the Guam Department of Agriculture as a Biologist II or Program Coordinator II (Grade M, Step 1), or Biologist III or Program Coordinator III (Grade N, Step 1), dependent on qualifications and experience. The position will be hired through normal Government of Guam hiring practices as a limited-term appointment under the Government of Guam job classification system.

This position is federally funded through the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Coral Reef jobshiringnearme.org Program. Benefits include health insurance, dental insurance, retirement, paid leave (annual, sick, and holidays), and training opportunities. Relocation expenses are not provided.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in biology, natural resource management, communications, education, or a related field
  • Three years of experience in marine science, natural resource management, chemistry, or a related field
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
  • Experience in public speaking, outreach, and education (please include on resume)
  • Proficiency in professional writing
  • Experience in graphic design software for outreach and education, such as Canva and/or Adobe Creative Suite
  • Able to pass a swim test
  • Experience in snorkeling and/or SCUBA diving
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Able to pass a medical examination, drug screening, and police/court clearance
  • Must be a United States citizen or otherwise legally permitted to work in the U.S.
  • Must be located in Guam or willing to relocate to Guam upon hiring

Other Desired Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in biology, chemistry, natural resource management, or a related field
  • SCUBA certification with a minimum of 30 logged dives
  • Rescue Diver or equivalent certification from an internationally recognized SCUBA training organization
  • Scientific diver training and experience
  • Experience using iNaturalist or similar citizen science tools
  • First Aid, CPR, and Emergency Oxygen certifications
