Job Description Summary

About URI: The University of Rhode Island enrolls approximately 17,000 students across its graduate and undergraduate programs and is the State’s flagship public research university, as well as the land grant and sea grant university, for the state of Rhode Island. The main campus is located in the historic village of Kingston, and the Bay Campus is located in Narragansett. Both campuses are near major beaches in a beautiful coastal community. URI is just 30 minutes from Providence, RI and within easy reach of Newport, Boston, and New York City.

The position is an in-person work schedule.

BASIC FUNCTION:

Coordinate the development, administration and management of community engagement and outreach programs of the Department of Public Safety.

Duties and Responsibilities

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Develop targeted educational presentations, materials, outlines, media, online materials, etc., for groups based on their individual needs. Present general public safety trainings to include URI 101, Greek Directors, HRL RA and New Student Orientation.

Deliver targeted educational sessions to select groups on campus, including faculty, staff, students, and visitors. Targeted sessions, as well as ongoing continuing education sessions, include those for new employees, students, and faculty and staff orientations.

Schedule, organize, and staff Community Policing events to strengthen the Police

Department’s relationship with external stakeholders. Provide various assistance to the Community Policing Officer as needed. Serve as the mandated Food Safety Manager at Community Policing events when necessary.

Coordinate the Citizens’ Police Academy, Police Department internship, and semester-long training program for interested students, faculty, and staff.

Serve as an enthusiastic advocate and spokesperson for the mission of providing unbiased information of the highest quality and integrity to solve problems for community stakeholders relevant to Public Safety.

Lead the Clery Compliance Team. Assist with the accuracy of Clery reporting prior to submittal. Work with the Dean of Students Office, Office of Community Standards, URI Police, and other departments, as well as on and off- campus stakeholders, regarding Clery Report information.

Maintain an accurate roster of Campus Security Authorities. Coordinate and conduct CSA training.

In conjunction with the Coordinator of Fire & Life Safety and the Coordinator of Alarm Services, manage the scheduling, and notification of fire drills for residence halls.

Develop and maintain an Emergency Needs Registry to capture the additional requirements of students, faculty and staff with differing needs during an emergency or fire drill (including prior notification of planned fire drills.) Work with Disability Student Services & Housing and Residential Life on safety plans for students requiring special assistance during fire alarms or other emergencies. Serve as a resource to the campus community.

Coordinate and schedule the Citizen Response to Active Shooter Events (CRASE) training and serve as a CRASE instructor for the department.

Manage the Department of Public Safety websites and social media outlets.

Develop and maintain public safety Google forms.

OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Maintain records (e.g., financial, business, program, etc.), and perform various other administrative and routine functions to support the unit.

Interact as needed with campus, local, State and Federal officials.

Perform additional duties as requested by the AVP of Public Safety.

LICENSES, TOOLS, AND EQUIPMENT:

Personal computers, printers, fax machines, scanners; word processing, database

management, browser-based, graphical and spreadsheet software. Ability to obtain ServSafe Food Safety Manager certification or equivalent as approved by the RI Department of Health within one year of hire.

OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Maintain records (e.g., financial, business, program, etc.), and perform various other administrative and routine functions to support the unit.

Interact as needed with campus, local, State and Federal officials.

Perform additional duties as requested by the Director of Public Safety.

LICENSES, TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT:

Personal computers, printers, fax machines, scanners; word processing, database management, browser-based, graphical and spreadsheet software.

Required Qualifications

REQUIRED:

1. Bachelor’s degree in emergency management, public relations and/or communications, criminology, criminal justice or closely-related field.

2. Minimum five years’ experience in delivering presentations and working with diverse populations in some combination of the areas of public safety operations, emergency management, and/or legal affairs.

3. Demonstrated strong interpersonal and verbal communication skills.

4. Demonstrated proficiency in written communication skills.

5. ServSafe Food Safety Manager certification or equivalent as approved by the RI Department of Health within one year of hire.

Preferred Qualifications

PREFERRED:

1. Applied knowledge of the Jeanne Clery Campus Safety Act. “Civilian Response to Active Shooter Events Instructor” certification within one year of hire.

2. Demonstrated experience in an academic/collegiate environment performing emergency management and public safety duties.

3. Demonstrated experience facilitating, instructing, and presenting materials to diverse populations, including college-aged students.

4. Demonstrated experience with grant projects and audit reporting demonstrated experience with public safety software products.

5. Demonstrated website/social media development skills.
