The jobshiringnearme.org Technician supports environmental projects for the Tribal Government, ensuring compliance with Tribal policies and federal standards. Key responsibilities include assisting with lake sturgeon rehabilitation, invasive species management, wild rice conservation, and youth camp activities. This role involves frequent fieldwork, long days outdoors, and hands-on environmental stewardship.

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS

• High school diploma or GED and 1 (one) year of experience
• Must possess valid driver’s license and be insurable on company policy

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 

• Report daily to assigned project leads
• Be prepared to work in varied field conditions (wind, rain, snow, sleet, heat)
• Assist with nmé (lake sturgeon) rehabilitation (deployment and maintain nets and egg mats, assist with hatchery operations)
• Identify and monitor invasive species using best practices and tools such as GPS, Midwest Invasive Species Information Network (MISIN), and Survey123
• Perform manual and chemical removal of invasive species
• Support mnomen (wild rice) restoration (seeding, monitoring, transplanting, habitat mapping, harvesting)
• Conduct field work, data entry, and outreach for environmental projects
• Safely operate, maintain and repair equipment (watercraft, chainsaws, herbicide sprayers, UTVs, hand/power tools, other field equipment)
• Serve as a camp counselor at the Jijak Youth Camp
• Attend classroom and field trainings as required
• Provide general support for department activities

• Punctual, dependable, and adaptable to changing priorities
• Organized, self-motivated, and able to work independently and in teams
• Knowledge of plant, fish, and invertebrate identification or ability to learn using dichotomous keys
• Clear communication and positive collaboration
• Ability (or willingness to learn) to safely trailer and operate utility vehicles and watercraft

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

• Ability to regularly lift and/or move up to 50 lbs., and occasionally lift and/or move 75 lbs.
• Normal, corrective vision range, the ability to see color and the ability to distinguish letters, numbers and symbols
• Manual dexterity to operate job-related equipment
• Performance of job duties will require standing, walking, lifting, reaching, pushing, pulling, twisting and grasping

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

• Maintain certifications including pesticide applicator license, first aid, and CPR
• Work non-traditional hours including evenings, weekends and holidays
• Travel for fieldwork, meetings and continuing education
• Work in harsh weather conditions including wind, rain, snow, sleet, excessive heat, and heavy pollen
• Work outdoors with heavy mosquito and tick presence
• Work in a boat or canoe, on lakes and rivers
• Exposure to air pollution, noise pollution and chemicals, though appropriate PPE and safety training will be provided
• Exposure to moving mechanical parts and other potentially hazardous equipment, though safety training will be provided
