2025 Adult Crew Supervisor Position Description

Rocky Mountain Youth Corps (RMYC) is a nonprofit youth development organization serving New Mexico. We inspire young adults to make a positive difference in themselves and their communities.

POSITION PURPOSE:
Crew Supervisors are RMYC field-based staff who manage the day-to-day operations of crews of youth and young adults, and are integral to the fulfillment of RMYC’s mission. The Crew Supervisor will manage a diverse crew of participants between the ages of 18 to 30 in the safe and efficient completion of conservation projects outdoors, while providing structured opportunities for personal and professional development throughout this season. Often working under minimal supervision, Crew Supervisors exercise discretion and independent judgment on matters relating to the safety, well-being, and performance of crew members in the field. Crew supervisors are trained, empowered, and expected to enforce RMYC and AmeriCorps policies and expected behavior of Corpsmembers in office and the field.
POSITION TYPE:
Seasonal, full time, non-exempt
SCHEDULE:
Schedule consists of Day work or Spike work.
Day work schedule is Monday-Friday from 7:00am-5:30pm with weekends off.
Spike schedule is Tuesday-Tuesday, 7:00am-5:30pm, camping at the project site. Spike is 8 days on shift followed by 6 days off.
HOURLY WAGE:
$17.50 per hour before taxes, paid every two weeks. Overtime eligible.

DATES:
Feb 3, 2025 – Nov 14, 2025. 11 weeks paid orientation training followed by project work. (Actual dates and locations may vary due to weather, COVID-19, or other conditions)
LOCATION:
1203 King Dr, Taos, NM 87571 with project locations throughout the state.
Participants must have reliable transportation to and from this location, according to their work schedule for the duration of the season.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
Essential Function: Crew Operations
- Directly supervise a crew of 7 AmeriCorps members in the completion of projects such as trail construction/maintenance, fencing, invasive species removal, and additional projects as assigned, meeting high standards of safety, quality and efficiency.
- Provide on-the-job training and coaching to members to develop necessary project-related skills.
- Manage personnel matters with a level of autonomy from staff while in remote areas with limited communication and support channels.
- Hold crew accountable to RMYC policy and code of conduct and utilize the discipline spectrum, as needed, with staff support.
- If deployed, lead crew during disaster relief work lasting up to 45 days.
- Inform RMYC staff and agency partners of important crew developments during formal and informal meetings/debriefs.
- Plan for and purchase crew-related food and supplies as needed, with a set budget, and properly document receipts.
Essential Function: Risk Management
- Manage crew’s physical/emotional well-being and promote a culture of safety in all aspects of crew life.
- Safely transport crew to/from project sites in an RMYC vehicle.
- Respond to safety concerns with appropriate and timely decisions and action, keeping RMYC staff informed.
- Be the primary point of contact in critical situations such as wildfires, medical emergencies, and other unanticipated crises.
Essential Function: Corpsmember Development
- Maintain a healthy group dynamic by promoting inclusivity, communication, and conflict resolution.
- Facilitate both formal and informal job, college readiness, and life skills training on an ongoing basis.
- Serve as a professional role model, upholding RMYC policies and holding members accountable for actions.
- Oversee a highly structured, participatory camp environment during spike projects
Essential Function: Corpsmember Management
- Review and approve member time cards, directing members on appropriate coding and ultimately approving all member time.
- Prepare mid-season and end-of-season member evaluations with the support of RMYC Training Staff.
- Enforce RMYC and AmeriCorps policies, prepare corrective action as needed for policy violations up to and including the exit of a corpsmember if needed
- Assist in the processing of corpsmember onboarding and exiting paperwork
Essential Function: Independent Leadership and Critical Thinking Skills.
- Be adaptable. The nature of spike work in remote areas presents unique challenges that aren’t always anticipated, and which may require critical decisions to be made without immediate guidance and/or support from RMYC staff or agency partners.
- Make informed decisions in the field to accommodate for changing weather conditions, gear malfunctions, and other unanticipated events.
- Make informed safety and work decisions in remote areas with limited communication and support channels.
- Manage and coordinate emergency response in remote areas with limited communication and support channels, and where additional resources or evacuation might take hours or days to be coordinated.
Essential Function: Administrative Duties
- Prepare detailed, accurate weekly reports (project data, photos, incident reports, job hazard analysis, etc.).
- Record and document all personnel matters with incident reports and uphold RMYC’s discipline process and expectations.
- Submit all receipts in a timely manner as described in RMYC’s Receipt Policy.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- 21 years of age as of February 10, 2025; valid, insurable driver’s license (without major citations).
- US Citizen or Permanent Legal Resident
- Able to complete entire length of service term (See “Dates” above)
- Experience working with youth ages 18 – 25, preferably in a leadership, mentoring or instructional capacity.
- Ability to analyze projects with RMYC staff, determine capability of crew to accomplish work assignments and best work methods, appropriate tools, safety methods, and materials.
- Experience with building a positive group dynamic; confidence in working with diverse and challenging populations.
- Excellent public speaking skills to conduct training sessions and facilitate group discussions.
- Good attention to detail and ability to write accurate, thorough correspondence and reports.
- Wilderness First Aid (WFA) or WFA certification within 90 days of hire.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Wilderness First Responder or higher medical certification
- Two or more seasons of experience with outdoor conservation projects.
- Experience with applying Leave No Trace principles.
- Two or four-year degree in natural resources, outdoor education, teaching, or related field.
- Proficient driving in 4WD conditions and maneuvering with trailers.
PHYSICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL REQUIREMENTS:
In performing the essential functions of this position, the Crew Supervisor will be required to:
- Lift or move up to 50 pounds occasionally, up to 20 pounds frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds constantly.
- Frequently traverse uneven terrain; balance, stoop, kneel, reach, push, pull, and/or grasp.
- Have visual acuity to operate motor vehicles and to determine the accuracy, neatness, and thoroughness of work assigned.
- Receive detailed information through oral communication; convey important spoken instructions accurately and effectively.
- Work outdoors, subject to outside environmental conditions.
