Purpose:

Stewards Individual Placements, a program of jobshiringnearme.org Legacy, provides individuals with service and career opportunities to strengthen communities and preserve our natural resources. The Community Volunteer Ambassador (CVA) Program combines the strength of a national leader in conservation service with the National Park Service to train emerging leaders to assist park units in building lasting connections to communities.

Climbing out of his boat and onto shore in 1542, Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo stepped into history as the first European to set foot on what is now the West Coast of the United States. In addition to telling the story of 16th century exploration, Cabrillo National Monument is home to a wealth of cultural and natural resources. It offers tremendous views of San Diego region and excellent opportunity to explore this natural and cultural history in the area- the Old Point Loma Lighthouse, Whale Overlook, beautiful coastal area, intertidal zone, birding, wildflowers, and more!

Our volunteers are a diverse coalition of all origins who serve this park with their skills, dedication, and passion. In 2022, they donated more than 12,500 hours of service to the park. That’s the equivalent to the work of at least six full-time employees! From swearing in Junior Rangers at the Visitor Center, monitoring native species of reptiles and amphibians, to removing invasive plant species at the park, these volunteers all play a vital role in “preserving unimpaired the natural and cultural resources and values of the National Park System for the enjoyment, education, and inspiration of this and future generations.” As a volunteer program, we strive to be welcoming and open to all; we are a place where you can belong and become.

Cabrillo National Monument is seeking a dynamic and enthusiastic recent graduate for a paid internship position in volunteer coordination. This unique role offers a blend of administrative responsibilities and hands-on fieldwork, ideal for individuals passionate about public lands and volunteer management. As an integral part of the Interpretation, Education, and Volunteers (IEV) team, the Volunteer Program Intern (CVA) will gain valuable experience in volunteer program development, outreach, and professional development. This position provides an excellent opportunity to build a career in the National Park Service (NPS) and contribute to the stewardship of Cabrillo National Monument, a premier San Diego destination with a focus on collaboration, inclusion, and community engagement.

Description of Duties:

• Collaborate with volunteer supervisors and the park volunteer coordinator to ensure consistency and efficiency in volunteer management.
• Assist in recruiting, training, and retaining volunteers for various park programs and initiatives.
• Coordinate outreach and expand volunteer opportunities to local universities, colleges, and retired individuals, enhancing diversity and engagement in the volunteer pool.
• Participate in planning and execution of events such as the Monumental Conference and Volunteer Exchange Field Trips to support volunteer development and cross-organizational collaboration.
• Contribute to the enhancement of volunteer orientation processes to create a more engaging and immersive onboarding experience.
• Work closely with park leadership and staff to support and implement community-focused initiatives, including tailored volunteer experiences for local groups.
• Develop Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for key tasks to ensure long-term sustainability of the park’s volunteer programs.
• Gain exposure to all aspects of park operations, including the activities of different divisions, to broaden professional development and career opportunities within the NPS.

Qualifications:

• Availability to Work Weekends: This position requires the ability to work weekends, with typical days off being Mondays and Tuesdays. Flexibility to work occasional evening shifts for special events is also required.
• Strong Communication Skills: Both written and verbal communication skills are essential for interacting with staff, volunteers, and visitors.
• Organizational Skills: Ability to manage multiple tasks, prioritize effectively, and work independently in an administrative and field-based environment.
• Experience with Microsoft Office Suite or Similar Software: Proficiency in word processing, spreadsheets, and presentation software.
• Willingness to Work Outdoors: The position involves some fieldwork, including outreach events and supporting volunteers on-site.
• Valid Driver’s License: A valid driver’s license is required for occasional travel to off-site events and community outreach activities.
• United States citizen, United States national, or a lawful permanent resident alien
• Applicants must be between ages of 18-30 years old, or up to 35 for veteran, based on Public Land Corps Act of 1993 authorizing this AmeriCorps opportunity.
• Has received a high school diploma or equivalency certificate; or has not dropped out of secondary school to enroll as an AmeriCorps participant and agrees to obtain a high school diploma or its equivalent prior to using the education award.
• Agrees to provide information to establish eligibility and to complete a National Service Criminal History Check.

 Preferred Qualifications:

• Recent graduate (within 2 years) with a degree in a relevant field such as Environmental Science, Public Administration, Recreation Management, Education, or similar.
• Previous volunteer or internship experience, particularly in volunteer coordination or public lands.
• Familiarity with the National Park Service or other government/public organizations.
• Experience in event coordination, outreach, or public speaking.
• An understanding of environmental conservation and stewardship, particularly in relation to public lands and historical sites.
• Familiarity with volunteer management software or databases.
• Interest in or previous involvement with Indigenous peoples’ history and culture in relation to public lands.

Time Requirements:

• This position is expected to serve 40 hours each week, but exact service schedules may vary.
• Lunch breaks will not be counted towards AmeriCorps service.
• Member may be required to participate in national, state, or local service projects or events as part of their service term.

Orientation and Training:

• Member will receive an orientation that includes training on AmeriCorps prohibited and unallowable activities.
• Week-long, in-person training on NPS volunteer program management and leadership skills.
• Year-long continuum of learning supporting professional development
• $1,200 in Professional Development Funds

Additional Position and Community Information

Collaborative, Cross-Divisional Work Environment: As part of a small but dedicated team of 20-25 staff members, the CVA will have the opportunity to work closely with employees from different divisions, gaining exposure to various aspects of park operations. Collaboration with Local Partners: Cabrillo maintains strong relationships with local universities, partner organizations, and community groups. The CVA will work directly with these groups, helping to expand volunteer outreach and connect Cabrillo to the broader San Diego community.

Evaluation and Reporting:

• As an AmeriCorps member, performance will be evaluated on whether the member has completed the required number of hours, the member has satisfactorily completed assignments, and if the member has met other performance criteria that were clearly communicated at the beginning of the term of service.
• Reporting requirements include, but are not limited to, bi-weekly timesheets and accomplishment tracking.
