You must have a deep understanding of our target audience of people aged 30-49 and understand how and where they want to consume their news.You bring ideas, journalistic credentials and distinctive life experience that can inspire teams to find stories relevant to underrepresented communities across Canada. Understanding the importance of diversity of perspective is crucial.You have a strong understanding of the business beat and what stories we need to be covering each day, particularly the ones that will be relevant to our target audience. You are deeply familiar with the CBC’s Journalistic Standards and Practices, especially as it pertains to covering issues within the business beat.Constant change is a given.This leader needs to be flexible and adaptable when priorities evolve and our focus shifts toward new subject areas, new forms of storytelling and new audiences. You must be comfortable leading a team based in multiple provinces.You have exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, and the ability to mentor and support a team to make great content.An inclusive and collaborative approach to leadership is essential. We need someone who can maximize the reach and impact of our work by building connections with colleagues right across all areas of CBC News.Key Tasks:– Assign a team of multi-platform journalists, focusing on priority stories in the business beat that will be particularly relevant to our target audience of 30-49 year olds.-Pitch and advocate daily for business stories in assignments meetings, be responsive to breaking and relevant emerging business news, while also driving original stories.-Place priority on news stories that reflect Canada’s geographic, racial, cultural and socio-economic diversity.– Propose and plan coverage for newsworthy business events and news stories that touch the business world, collaborating with teams across the network and the broader CBC News.– Ensure storytelling for video, audio and text platforms has high production values. Understand in particular the needs around digital video.

– Perform an initial copy edit or script vet of stories, identifying what is lacking and clearly articulating to journalists how to improve storytelling and packaging.– Support journalists pursuing enterprise stories, balancing daily demands with original journalism.– Work collaboratively with local and network news and program leaders, as well as leaders in local newsrooms and in Radio-Canada.– Develop and maintain contacts with a wide variety of sources.QualificationsWe are looking for a candidate with the following:– University degree or equivalent required.– Must have 10 years of relevant experience and recognized journalistic and leadership credentials.– Exceptional leadership skills and organizational ability.– Cultural sensitivity and awareness, with strong connections to diverse communities– Lived experience that broadens journalistic perspectives.– Experience pursuing stories in under-represented communities.– Ability to recognize issues of importance quickly and take effective action to ensure appropriate coverage.– Skill in generating ideas for original stories and overseeing original journalism.– Outstanding communication and collaboration skills; ability to work cooperatively with team members and supervisors inhigh pressure situations.– Solid technical grasp of broadcast and online production tools and methods.– Ability to work long hours as required.Candidates may be subject to skills and knowledge testing.Candidates may be subject to skills and knowledge testing.We thank all applicants for their interest, but only candidates selected for an interview will be contacted.As part of our recruitment process, candidates who advance to the nextstep will be asked to complete a background check.
