About the Program and Position
The Departments of Health Sciences and Kinesiology in the Faculty of Applied Health Sciences welcome applications from early career scientists for an independent research program in Human Cardiovascular Physiology for consideration as nominees to the Canada Impact+ Emerging Leaders competition, aligning with a Canada Impact+ Research Chair in Human Mobility and Wearable Technologies.
The Canada Impact+ Research Chairs program represents a $1 billion investment over 12 years from the federal government to support institutions in attracting internationally renowned researchers currently living and residing outside Canada. Impact+ Chairs are awarded in strategic priority areas established by the Government of Canada to address pressing global and domestic challenges, strengthen Canada’s contribution to international research and innovation, and generate lasting social and economic benefits for Canada and the world. A core expectation is that Chairs and their research teams will build significant new partnerships and actively mobilize research outcomes into practice, policy, and commercialization pathways. Impact+ Chairs will receive long-term funding and institutional support to advance ambitious and transformative projects while actively developing the next generation of highly qualified personnel.
Valued at $600,000 over six years, the Impact+ Emerging Leader award funds salaries, benefits, and research activities to help recruit internationally based Early Career Researchers (ECRs). A six-year funded extension, at 100% of the original award value, may be possible contingent on confirming the person recruited as an ECR has progressed in their academic career and demonstrates the research conducted since the recruitment has been transformational, translational and has garnered partners. The ECR in Human Cardiovascular Physiology must be aligned with the following federal strategic priority area: health including biotechnology. The selected ECR will be expected to have an independent program of research from the Impact+ Chair, with potential for impact through collaboration.

Faculty of Applied Health Sciences
The Faculty of Applied Health Sciences is home to 5 academic Departments: Health Sciences, Kinesiology, Nursing, Recreation and Leisure Studies, and Sport Management. Departments of Health Sciences and Kinesiology
The selected candidate will have a primary appointment in the Department of Health Sciences with a cross-appointment in the Department of Kinesiology. Both departments house a multidisciplinary community of scholars recognized for their innovative, influential, and on-trend research programs focused on important health issues. Both departments also have strong records of obtaining and supporting Canada Research Chairs, both Tier I and Tier II and aligned with all three Tri-Council funding agencies (see https://www.canada.ca/en/research-coordinating-committee/corporate/canadas-research-funding-ecosystem.html). This Impact+ Emerging Leader will be part of the strategic plan for Brock’s Departments of Health Sciences and Kinesiology to create an internationally renowned cluster in human health and physiology. Affiliations to other institutes and centers are encouraged, especially the Bfit Centre.
Both the Departments of Health Sciences and Kinesiology enjoy large undergraduate and graduate student populations as well as active, diverse, and collaborative research faculty who have been continuously recruiting, training and retaining the largest number of high qualified personnel (HQP). This large and diverse pool of HQP is the result of the Faculty of Applied Health Sciences successful and systematic recruitment strategies, as evidenced by the number of yearly awarded tri-council scholarships.
Cross-appointed in the Departments of Health Sciences and Kinesiology, the ECR in Human Cardiovascular Physiology will expand on existing areas of excellence and expertise available across the Departments. This is an exceptional opportunity for an emerging scholar to invest in this reputation, while facilitating the development of a unique research niche.
Qualifications
The optimal candidate will have a history of demonstrating excellence in areas of human cardiovascular physiology in both healthy and clinical populations, working in collaborative interdisciplinary environments. We are looking for an international ECR in human cardiovascular physiology with expertise across any of these relevant subfields, including pathophysiology and cardiac rehabilitation, bringing a body of coherent research and associated impact to both the Departments of Health Sciences and Kinesiology, as well as the Bfit Centre.
The ideal candidate will have a strong potential of securing external research funding, generating high quality scholarly outputs and training highly qualified personnel. The successful candidate will be expected to teach existing courses while also developing new courses in the Departments of Health Sciences and Kinesiology and supervise undergraduate and graduate students.
As required by Brock University, candidates must hold a PhD in Health Sciences, Kinesiology, or related field, and have strong experience specializing in human cardiovascular physiology with an added benefit demonstrating the ability to transfer research to clinical applications. Applicants are also expected to demonstrate a continuous commitment to mentoring and training undergraduate and graduate students, postdoctoral scholars, and research technicians.
Eligible to apply are only individuals working and residing outside Canada and are an Early Career Researcher.
The successful candidate must be an emerging scholar with promise of research leadership in Human Cardiovascular Physiology. The area of expertise is open and may include, but is not limited to, subfields such as clinical exercise physiology, pathophysiology and cardiac rehabilitation. The successful candidate will have expertise in fundamental physiological processes including mechanisms underlying health in general, cardiovascular health, aging, as well as the impact of lifestyle and environmental factors on human physiological function. Research that examines sex- and gender-related differences in physiology, including the effects of female-specific biological transitions such as menopause, is welcome. Experience using advanced methodologies in human physiology research including ultrasound, magnetic resonance, optical imaging, or other integrative physiological and/or molecular mechanism assessment techniques, would be considered an asset.
The Impact+ Emerging Leader will have the opportunity to collaborate with the Brock Functional Inclusive Training (Bfit) Centre and the Lifespan Development Research Institute to support Brock’s active research related to community health and exercise programs to improve health and quality of life in older adults, cardiac patients, and individuals with neurological disorders. The Impact+ Emerging Leader will augment this research by establishing a research program focused on an area of human cardiovascular physiology that could include individual and community-based interventions that protect and restore physiological function including cardiocirculatory function to reduce the risk of a collection of health conditions and chronic diseases. The scholar will also contribute to the training, mentorship, and well-being of Brock undergraduate and graduate students through teaching and research supervision.

c. the potential for the Emerging Leader to enhance your scholarly leadership and innovation capacity within the Department, Faculty, and University in strategic areas
(Note: Please include your alignment with the Impact+ priority areas, primarily in health, including biotechnology).
3) An updated and complete curriculum vitae, which may highlight both traditional (e.g., grants, presentations, peer-reviewed scholarly and creative work) and non-traditional (e.g., community engagement initiatives, reciprocity in the form of partnerships and collaborative practices, advocacy work, knowledge translation, and other modes of scholarship that are relevant to your program of research) metrics of research excellence.
4) A statement (2 page maximum) of teaching and mentorship philosophies, teaching experiences, interests related to Departmental and Faculty programs, and strategies to support diverse student populations.
5) A statement (2 page maximum) of strengths and experiences in supporting Indigenous engagement, equity, diversity, and inclusion for their discipline through research, curriculum, advocacy, community outreach or engagement, and student support.
6) Names and contact information of three academic referees who could provide confidential letters of assessment that speak to the candidate’s suitability to hold a tenure-track faculty position as an Impact+ Emerging Leader. Letters will not be requested unless an applicant is short listed.
Impact+ nominations are subject to review and final approval through the Impact+ program. The appointment will be at a probationary tenure-track faculty level at the rank of Assistant Professor, contingent upon the outcome of the Impact+ nominations of both the Research Chair and the ECR.

Impact+ Emerging Leaders and accompanying family members (spouse and dependent children under 22) will be eligible for fast-track work permit approvals under the Global Skills Strategy, with a target of 2-week processing. Researchers recruited under this initiative will have access to existing economic immigration streams, with accelerated transitions to permanent residency for selected high-skilled workers.
It is anticipated that a decision from the Impact+ Program is in June 2026 with an award start date of September 2026. The effective date for the academic appointment may be between September 2026 and June 2027 and is negotiable with the Faculty Dean. Nominees are expected to begin their appointment within 12 months of the Impact+ Research Chairholder accepting the award.
The appointment is subject to budgetary approval and dependent on the success of the Impact+ Research Chair award.
The target hiring range for this position is $127,000 – $140,000. The final salary will be determined based on relevant experience, internal equity, and budget considerations.
