Backcountry Restoration Crew

jobshiringnearme.org

About the position:  We will be hiring 4 restoration crew members for 2026 who will spend roughly 30-40 days in the backcountry from June-August. Great Burn jobshiringnearme.org Alliance (GBCA) crews will work in partnership with the Nez Perce-Clearwater, Lolo, and Idaho Panhandle National Forests to implement a backcountry integrated noxious weed plan. The U.S. Forest Service is required to treat prioritized noxious weeds across its landscape under federal law; many of the most remote landscapes can only be treated by small, mobile crews that occupy these backcountry areas over multiple days. Utilizing 8-day hitches, the GBCA Backcountry Restoration Crew will employ chemical, biological (primarily insects), and mechanical methods of treatment to address noxious weed infestations in priority areas of the backcountry such as trails, meadows, dispersed campsites, and recent burn scars. Crews will consist of two members, but will combine for larger job objectives in certain areas of the project (depending upon the type of restoration work).

Other key aspects of the job will include conducting vegetation and biological control monitoring at selected sites within the project area, establishing new monitoring sites as appropriate, and surveying/inventorying the landscape to identify new noxious weed infestations. Coordination with project partners for biological control collections and releases as well as incorporation of volunteer-oriented work will be a necessary component of the job.
