The University of Montana Bird Ecology Lab is hiring two experienced technicians to conduct avian point count surveys on Montana’s largest river system from the Madison River near Yellowstone National Park to the wild and scenic Upper Missouri River Breaks National Monument. Surveys will be conducted on public and private lands in riparian habitats that sustain some of the highest diversity of birds in the western US. Technicians will canoe up to 15 miles of river per day, hike off trail to survey locations, and car camp most of the week. Several multi-day overnight boat trips are required to access road-less river sections of the Monument. Technicians may also have the opportunity to assist with additional field studies, including nest box monitoring for riparian cavity nesting species. Surveys will be conducted independently, but technicians will travel and share housing with a larger crew. Training in project protocols, river paddling skills, bird identification, and field safety will be provided the first week of the field season. This position offers an incredible opportunity to explore Montana’s scenic rivers while contributing to a multi-partner effort to conserve riparian bird populations in the western US. Rental vehicle will be provided; technicians may drive personal 4WD vehicles with reimbursement for mileage at the current Montana State rate. Shared field housing will be provided in or near Helena, Montana.
Schedule Approx. May 20th – July 26th, 2025, full-time 40–45 hours/week. Opportunity to extend work on related projects for 1-2 weeks.
