The Opportunity
Reporting to the Vice President CDARI, the Associate Vice-President (AVP), International Centre plays a pivotal role in spearheading, shaping and overseeing SAIT’s global strategy.
The incumbent’s influence and responsibilities are broad and comprehensive, including, but not limited to, providing results-oriented, effective institutional leadership and management. In collaboration with academic and other administrative departments, the AVP will oversee the designing, development, planning, implementation, and periodic assessment of campus-wide, comprehensive internationalization. This includes international recruitment, international partnerships, global education and partnerships, immigration and settlement supports, cultural, social, and outreach programs, and services for all international students at SAIT as well as providing critical insight into newcomer students at SAIT or looking to study at SAIT. As a senior manager, the AVP will ensure the achievement of international goals by developing key relations both within the institution and in key geographic regions in Canada and around the world.
The AVP produces SAIT wide strategies to attract and retain international students, developing international partnerships, developing scalable frameworks to grow initiatives, requiring a high degree of self-direction, collaboration with others, and has the ability to set priorities and to be responsive to the demands of a broad range of stakeholders in an applied education setting.
The Role
- Strategic Leadership:
- Develop international recruitment strategies and manage risks.
- Assess programming with the Academic Division.
- Support international students from arrival to workforce integration.
- Forge strategic partnerships with global institutions, supporting student mobility, collaborative programs, and faculty interactions and exchanges.
- Enhance international initiatives using data.
- Align recruitment with SAIT’s enrolment plan.
- Position SAIT as a leader in International Education.
- Maintain a global recruitment team.
- Oversee admissions and ensure compliance.
- Integrate technology for recruitment and retention.
- Respond to global crises affecting international students.
- Recommend new programs based on data analysis.
- Financial and Risk Management:
- Manage fiscal operations for International Recruitment, Admissions, Business Operations, and Student Support.
- Ensure compliance with federal immigration regulations as a Designated Learning Institute.
- Meet SEM targets, enrolling over 6,000 international students and generating $170 million in tuition revenue.
- Establish standards and manage risk for federal immigration compliance.
- Govern policies and risk management for international initiatives.
- Oversee departmental budget planning ($10 million+ annually).
- Develop assessment tools for internationalization decisions.
- Conduct financial audits to ensure public sector compliance.
- Review and recommend tuition adjustments based on competitor analysis.
- Relationship Management:
- Collaborate with internal stakeholders and global partners.
- Maintain and grow senior-level contacts in Canada and internationally.
- Oversee international student services with various departments.
- Develop and implement a global relationship strategy.
- Represent SAIT at international events to build and strengthen partnerships.
- Manage institutional relationships, including initiation and termination.
- Advocate for SAIT on national and international committees.
- Host and advise on engagements with international delegations.
- Collaborate with governments, NGOs, and educational bodies for grants and scholarships.
- Operational Guidance & Oversight:
- Lead the International Student Centre and Global Education strategy.
- Integrate internationalization across instruction, business development, and support services.
- Champion large projects related to admissions, enrolment, student support, and retention.
- Develop materials for SAIT’s Executive Management Council.
- Establish feedback mechanisms to improve services for international students.
- Culture and Service Excellence:
- Foster, promote and maintain a “student-first, service excellence culture within the International Centre (IC).
- Structure employee advancement and professional development opportunities to enable staff development and career progression.
- Enshrine international student staff and volunteers into the core functioning of the IC, establishing a robust talent pipeline and a departmental culture of student development.
- Champion and advance intercultural and newcomer strategies with the aim of reshaping SAIT’s cultural fabric related to recruiting, admitting, hiring, teaching and graduating equity deserving groups, including international students.
- Champion inclusion of faculty and staff training on intercultural competence and understanding.
- Serve as senior leader within CDARI division to assess and, where and when appropriate, adjudicate decisions relating to collective agreements and grievance proceedings.
Required Qualifications & Experience
- Master’s Degree
- 10 Years prior and relevant experience, and 3-5 years in a leadership position
- Regulated International Student Immigration Advisors (RISIA) designation
- Higher education preferred
- Minimum 5 years experience at Director level within post-secondary sector, preferably in International Education preferred
- RCIC designation preferred
Job classification: Associate Vice President
Salary range: $205,000 – $230,000
Paid Leave: 6 Weeks Vacation / 14 Flex Days per year
