Assistant Professor of Teaching in Sociology (Tenure-Track)

The Department of Sociology at the University of British Columbia – Vancouver invites applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor of Teaching with responsibility for teaching undergraduate courses at all levels, developing curriculum in Sociology or Family Studies and contributing to educational leadership within the Department and across UBC.

Requirements include: a Ph.D. in Sociology or Family Science; evidence of excellent teaching; demonstrated engagement in the scholarship of teaching and learning; alignment with one of the department’s areas of specialization (environment and community; sex, gender and sexuality; sociology of health; race, ethnicity and migration; family studies); demonstrated educational leadership; and experience engaging with issues of equity, diversity and Indigeneity in higher education contexts.

The successful candidate will be expected to maintain an excellent record of teaching, service and educational leadership. The normal teaching load of an Assistant Professor of Teaching is six 3-credit courses over the academic year. Courses will range from first- to fourth-year undergraduate courses. Where a significant level of additional service is assigned, teaching reduction may be granted. The application dossier should include: application letter, curriculum vitae, statement of teaching philosophy, evidence of teaching effectiveness (e.g., student course evaluations and/or peer reviews of teaching), a statement of how your experience or expertise aligns with UBC sociology and family studies programs, and two sample teaching materials (a course syllabus and a lesson plan). We also require a separate one-page statement identifying the applicant’s potential contributions to equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) in the university context along with their ability to work with a culturally diverse and international student body.

Other hiring information:
The anticipated start date of employment is July 1, 2026. The expected pay range for this position is $8,333/month – $9,167/month. The starting salary for the position will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. This position is subject to final budgetary approval. As this is a tenure-track position in the Educational Leadership stream, the successful candidate hired at the rank of Assistant Professor of Teaching will be reviewed for reappointment, tenure, and promotion in subsequent years, in accordance with the Collective Agreement.
