The Institute is seeking to fill a regular faculty position that focuses on contemporary Indigenous issues, preferably related to one or more of the following: Indigenous resistance and/or resurgence; two-spirit and queer studies; decolonial and anti-colonial critiques; and/or transnational perspectives.
Invitation from the current Director of the Institute
Kwey! I am Phyllis L. F. Rippey the director of the Institute of Feminist and Gender Studies, a sociologist by training, and a settler-immigrant to Canada, born in the United States, where my ancestors were settlers from Western Europe. The University, the Faculty of Social Sciences, and the Institute are committed to supporting and honoring the needs of Indigenous professors as outlined in the Indigenous Action Plan for uOttawa, including recognition in our collective agreement of Indigenous ways of knowing and doing research, flexibility in working conditions to support community engagement, formal Decolonization and Indigenizing Committees, numerous Indigenous partnerships, supports from our Indigenous Education Advisors, and many informal relationships between and among Indigenous and settler members of our community. I invite you to apply and share with us who you are.
Preferential Hiring of Indigenous Candidates
The hiring for this position will be done in accordance with the University’s Indigenous Action Plan, which seeks to remedy the under-representation of Indigenous faculty members. As a restricted hiring opportunity, and as provided in the provisions for a special program described by the Ontario Human Rights Commission, applicants must demonstrate in their application materials that they are eligible to be included in the category of Indigenous persons and will be asked to complete a confidential questionnaire at the time of submitting an application.
Title of the Position: Assistant Professor or if applicable, Associate Professor
Duties: The responsibilities of this position include teaching courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels, supervision of graduate students, and a sustained commitment to research and community service. The successful candidate will be a key resource for the development of Indigenous knowledge. The successful candidate will need to demonstrate a strong research program and/or potential, and a commitment to participating in the administrative activities of the unit and the Faculty. Research, as defined in Article 20 of the Association of Professors of the University of Ottawa (APUO) Collective Agreement includes, among other activities, work carried out using traditional/Indigenous knowledge and the practical applications or dissemination of such research generally, or specifically through engagement with Indigenous communities.
Bilingualism: As the University of Ottawa offers programs in both English and French, all faculty members in the Faculty of Social Sciences must demonstrate bilingualism before being granted tenure. Potential candidates who are not bilingual (French-English) at time of application should not hesitate to apply: the University offers faculty members and their spouse the opportunity to take courses to improve their second official language competencies.
