Description
The Schulich School of Engineering at the University of Calgary invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor in the Department of Geomatics Engineering. The anticipated start date is July 1, 2025 or a mutually agreed date.

The selected candidate must demonstrate alignment with the strategic plans of both the University of Calgary’s Ahead of Tomorrow (https://ucalgary.ca/about/ahead-of-tomorrow) and Schulich Momentum (https://schulich.ucalgary.ca/about/schulich-momentum), effectively supporting the specified strategic academic and research priorities.

The candidate must provide evidence of research excellence and prove the ability to build a robust research program within the research areas as outlined by the Department of Geomatics Engineering: (a) Geodesy, remote sensing and Earth Observation, (b) Positioning, navigation and wireless location, (c) Digital imaging systems, and (d) GIScience and land tenure (https://schulich.ucalgary.ca/geomatics/research/research-areas); demonstrated by a record of contributions and publications in top-ranked and field-relevant journals or conferences, or forthcoming publications meeting high international standards, the submitted research statement, presentations at significant conferences, awards and accolades, and strong endorsements by referees of top international stature.

The candidate must also provide evidence of excellence in teaching at undergraduate and graduate University levels. Particularly, the candidate must demonstrate the ability to teach courses in the Cadastral Surveying concentration offered by the Department of Geomatics Engineering (https://calendar.ucalgary.ca/programs/ENGOBSC) and specifically courses in Survey law and practice, and Land use planning.

The successful applicant will actively contribute to teaching, curriculum development, graduate student supervision and mentoring, and are expected to provide service in support of the Department, School, University, and the Profession. To be eligible for consideration, applicants must have earned a doctoral degree in geomatics engineering or a closely related discipline by the date of their appointment. The successful candidate at the Assistant Professor level must demonstrate evidence of a track record of publications in high-quality journals, potential for securing external research funding, and effectiveness in teaching at the university level.

Candidates should have strong oral and written English communication skills. All candidates must be eligible for registration as a professional engineer with the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA). In addition, they must have, or be qualified for and prepared to actively seek, commission or licensure as a Canada Lands Surveyor (CLS), or possess a commission from another provincial land surveying association.

Housed within the Schulich School of Engineering, the Department of Geomatics Engineering supports Schulich Momentum with the development of new technologies and harnessing big data through the IoT, satellites, 3D imaging, remote sensors, and autonomous vehicles. The Department of Geomatics Engineering at the University of Calgary is one of the leading geomatics engineering programs in the world, providing education, research, and public service in current and emerging areas. Our faculty and their research teams are leading major research funding and are involved in designing, conducting, and managing activities relating to surveying, positioning and navigation using GNSS and multi-sensor systems, sensors technologies for smartphones and autonomous vehicles navigation, Earth observation systems, geospatial information systems, digital imaging systems, and IoT.

The cover letter should address the eligibility for registration as a professional engineer with APEGA and a documented plan and timeline to seek commission or licensure as a Land Surveyor from the Association of Canada Land Surveyors.

• A statement of research interests, accomplishments, and vision that should demonstrate alignment with the Department of Geomatics Engineering, Schulich School of Engineering, and the University of Calgary research priorities (not to exceed two pages).
• A statement of teaching philosophy promoting student learning and success (not to exceed two pages). This can include information on teaching experience, training, and mentoring inside and outside the classroom at the undergraduate, graduate, and postdoctoral levels. The teaching statement must include a list of undergraduate and graduate courses offered in the Geomatics Engineering programs (including the Concentration in Cadastral Surveying) that the applicant is qualified to instruct.
• A statement about service contributions, including both past contributions and future interests for contributions, if hired in this position (not to exceed one page).
• A statement on promoting equity, diversity, and inclusion (not to exceed one page).
