Position: The Department of Music at the University of Lethbridge invites applications for an Assistant Professor and Wind Orchestra Director, to begin 1 July 2025.
Position Description: The successful candidate will:
• Direct the University of Lethbridge Wind Orchestra, including leading performances at events such as Convocation.
• Deliver one-on-one studio lessons in an instrumental studio area.
• Teach courses in instrumental conducting, as well as courses in the music program appropriate to the faculty member’s training, interests, and expertise.
• Develop and execute a program of original and impactful creative practice and/or scholarly research, as appropriate to the Assistant Professor rank and as required for future tenure and promotion in the Faculty of Fine Arts.
• Contribute in a meaningful and collaborative way to departmental service, as well as service to the Faculty, University, and/or community. Faculty members are expected to contribute to collegial governance through participation in committees at the departmental, Faculty, and/or University level.
• Contribute to curriculum development in the music program, including participation in new course and program development.
• Lead recruitment activities in the Music department, including recruitment to the University Wind Orchestra, fostering positive long-term relationships with K-12 schools and private studios.
• Participate in outreach, retention, and student engagement activities for the department, Faculty, and University.
• This position may include graduate teaching, supervision, and/or mentorship.
Essential Qualifications
• Doctorate or ABD in music or related field, or commensurate professional experience.
• Potential for excellence in performance, creative practice, and/or research, based on previous accomplishments and peer recognition, as appropriate to career stage and area of practice/research.
• Demonstrated effectiveness as a teacher and/or mentor to students or emerging musicians.
• Ability to teach a diverse student body, incorporating innovative and equity-informed pedagogical approaches, and contributing to decolonization and Indigenization through teaching activities.
• Ability to articulate a feasible and significant creative practice/research plan, with outcomes appropriate to the rank of an Assistant Professor.
• Ability to take initiative to develop and execute recruitment plans that maintain or grow enrolment in the studio area and the Wind Orchestra.
• Ability to contribute to department and Faculty culture in a positive manner, through collegiality, reliability, professional communication, conflict resolution skills, and collaboration.
Preferred Qualifications
• Woodwind instrument specialization.
• Experience teaching in a music program at the post-secondary level.
• Academic training or experience in music pedagogy.
• Ability to contribute to curriculum development and course delivery in music education.
• Ability to supervise and mentor graduate students and teach in graduate programs.
• Experience with community outreach, including working with the K-12 system or other environments outside of the post-secondary system.
About the Academic Unit:
The Music Department at the University of Lethbridge is central to a vibrant musical community that extends beyond its doors and into the surrounding community. The department includes 17 full-time academic staff whose reputations extend across Canada and beyond. We offer several undergraduate programs, including a BMus in Music Studio, and a BMus in Digital Audio Arts. Our state-of-the-art facilities include a renovated 201-seat, acoustically-tuned recital hall, a 450-seat proscenium theatre, and two professional recording studios.
The Music Department is part of the Faculty of Fine Arts, which also includes Art, Drama, and New Media departments, as well as a Multidisciplinary BFA program. The Faculty of Fine Arts includes two Canada Research Chairs: one in Indigenous Music, Culture, and Politics (Music) and one in Digital Extremism (New Media). The Faculty is committed to collaborative, community-oriented scholarship and research-creation.
In 2024, the Faculty of Fine Arts was gifted the Blackfoot name Piiksinaasin, which means Manifesting Beauty, by Dr. Leroy Little Bear. The name represents the Faculty of Fine Arts as a place where students create, explore and research, transforming the world around them through creative practice and critical thinking. The name reflects the Faculty’s long-standing support of Indigenous arts and creative initiatives and exemplifies the work done to advance reconciliation and decolonization.
