Assistant or Associate Professor in Environmentally Sustainable Animal Production Systems
Department of Animal and Poultry Science
College of Agriculture and Bioresources
The Department of Animal and Poultry Science (DAPS) in the College of Agriculture and Bioresources (AgBio) at the University of Saskatchewan (USask) invites applications from outstanding individuals for an Assistant or Associate Professor tenure-track position (12-month academic year appointment) in environmentally sustainable animal production systems. The successful candidate will join a strong, well established multidisciplinary academic and research team with expertise in nonruminant and ruminant nutrition, animal metabolism, nutritional physiology, livestock genomics and molecular genetics, feed processing, animal management, animal welfare, and toxicology. Also, the successful candidate will join a cohort of several new tenure-track faculty members hired within the strategic area of sustainable and digital agriculture, a priority research area rich with potential for collaboration, partnership, innovation, and impact. Information about this cluster hire can be found at agbio.usask.ca/agbio-cluster.
Position Description and Qualifications: The successful candidate will have an earned Ph.D. degree in animal science or a closely related field. It is required that the successful candidate will develop an innovative, nationally- and internationally-recognized independent research program including multidisciplinary and collaborative aspects that will contribute to the research strengths of the DAPS. The position will focus on environmentally sustainable animal production systems, with research including aspects of feeding and resource management, nutrient cycling, impacts of animal production on air and water quality, and mitigation strategies such as precision management, and use of digital agriculture for reducing the environmental impacts of animal production systems (e.g., reducing greenhouse emissions). The overall aim of the research program will be to develop practical solutions that promote both environmental stewardship and efficient animal production systems. Although the successful candidate may develop a research program focusing on their preferred livestock or poultry species, it is expected that they will seek collaborative research opportunities that will span across and improve the environmental sustainability of other livestock production systems. The successful candidate will be expected to seek and secure extramural funding in support of their research program from various sources, including provincial (e.g., the Saskatchewan Agricultural Development Fund and commodity groups) and national (e.g., NSERC Discovery and NSERC Alliance) funding agencies, and private industry. Other funding opportunities such as the International Joint Initiative for Research in Climate Change Adaptation and Mitigation funded through the federal New Frontiers in Research Fund may also be sought to facilitate international collaborations and expand the global impact of the successful candidate’s research. Candidates should be eligible for membership in the Saskatchewan Institute of Agrologists (https://sia.sk.ca/).
The successful candidate will also demonstrate excellence or promise of excellence in teaching and student mentorship, have excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills, and the ability to work effectively in a team environment. The training and mentorship of graduate students from diverse backgrounds at both the M.Sc. and Ph.D. levels will be required. The teaching opportunities for this position will include the development of new interdisciplinary and multi-species senior undergraduate and graduate courses in the sustainability of animal production systems. Other teaching responsibilities will include contributing to the delivery of undergraduate and graduate courses in animal production systems, including both ruminant and nonruminant species.
Faculty members in the DAPS have a long history of engagement with various animal industry sectors through their collaborative research and outreach activities that have provided significant benefits to those sectors. It is expected that the successful candidate in environmentally sustainable animal production systems will strengthen those close relationships with animal industry sectors by continuing the strong tradition of conducting industry-relevant research that directly addresses producer issues coupled with strong outreach activities. Also, the successful candidate will be expected to contribute to administrative roles within the Department by, inter alia, serving on various important committees.
The advertised position is a critical element of the vision for multidisciplinary scientific strength in feeds, domestic animal nutrition (including metabolism, toxicology, physiology), nutrigenomics, animal management, and animal welfare to serve an economically-, environmentally-, and socially-sustainable animal industry. In this respect, it is expected that the successful candidate will collaborate with an interdisciplinary team of researchers focused on sustainability related to animal production systems, other researchers in the DAPS, the College of AgBio and the Western College of Veterinary Medicine, research centres at the USask (e.g., Global Institute for Water Security), and outside the USask (e.g., Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, Environment and Climate Change Canada, and National Research Council of Canada). Research facilities that will be available to the successful candidate include the Rayner Dairy Research and Teaching Facility, the Poultry Research and Teaching Centre (hatchery, broiler, layer, turkey, and gnotobiotic research capacity), a multi-species livestock research building, the Canadian Feed Research Centre (industrial, pilot and laboratory scale feed processing), the Prairie Swine Centre (a 300-sow farrow to finish research facility), the Livestock and Forage Centre of Excellence (beef feedlot, cow-calf operation, and bison research facilities), and state-of-the-art analytical laboratories. Other facilities on the USask campus that might be relevant to the successful candidate’s research activities include the Grains Innovation Laboratory, the Canadian Light Source, VIDO-InterVac, the Saskatchewan Structural Sciences Centre, and the Saskatchewan Food Industry Development Centre Inc.
The position comes with a comprehensive benefits package which includes a pension plan, life insurance coverage (compulsory and voluntary), sick leave, death benefit, dental plan, extended health and vision care plan, employee assistance program, and flexible health and wellness spending program. The salary bands for this position for the 2025-2026 academic year are as follows: Assistant Professor – $110,489 to $131,909; and Associate Professor – $131,909 to $153,329.
Application Procedure: Interested applicants should submit a cover letter, a statement of research interests and goals related to the position, a statement of teaching philosophy, and a complete curriculum vitae that includes educational qualifications, research and teaching experience, history of secured extramural research grants, and a full list of peer-reviewed publications.
