Description

The University of Calgary, Faculty of Law, invites applications for a full-time tenure-track academic position. We are interested in hearing from all exceptional candidates, but we are especially interested in applicants with expertise in the following areas: (1) private international law, (2) tax law, (3) criminal law, and/or (4) constitutional law.

While it is anticipated that this appointment will be at the rank of Assistant Professor (tenure-track), we will consider appointing established scholars at the rank of Associate Professor (with tenure) if the successful candidate brings a significant and ongoing program of research to the University of Calgary. The anticipated start date for the appointment is July 1, 2026.

Associated Responsibilities

The successful candidate will engage in a combination of teaching, scholarly research, and service while contributing to an inclusive, equitable, and collegial work environment across all activities.

The successful candidate must demonstrate the desire and potential to initiate and produce high-impact research and scholarship. The candidate’s research interests should align with their teaching interests, and an active research agenda is expected of all members of Faculty. In addition, we are especially interested in candidates with the ability to supervise graduate students.

The successful candidate will participate in Faculty and university service. They will be expected to demonstrate a genuine commitment to constructive participation in the life of the Faculty of Law and within the University and the broader professional community.

Position Requirements, Qualifications, Skills and Achievements Required for the Appointment

Candidates must have a JD or LLB degree together with an advanced degree in Law or a related field and, in most cases, will have completed or be close to completing a PhD, SJD, or its equivalent, in law or a related field, at the time of appointment.

Candidates will demonstrate:
• A proven record of research excellence and publications.
• Excellence in teaching, or evidence of the potential to succeed in teaching.
• The ability and commitment to teach in the Faculty of Law’s first-year and core curriculum.
• An interest in incorporating practice integrated or experiential learning in the classroom.
• An ability to establish effective relationships and to represent and promote the Faculty of Law at the university, and within the wider legal community.
• Evidence of the potential to supervise graduate students.

A successful candidate at the Associate Professor level must also have a demonstrated track-record of sustained high-quality publications in leading peer-reviewed journals, a record of excellence in University-level teaching, and graduate student supervision.

• A cover letter and curriculum vitae, including relevant academic, research, and professional experience.
• A statement of research agenda including interests, accomplishments, and plans for future projects and grant applications (maximum 2 pages).
• A statement of teaching experience and interests as well as teaching philosophy (maximum of 2 pages total).
• Two representative scholarly publications or, where publications are not available, other samples of written work.
• Evidence of teaching effectiveness (such as evaluations), or, if no formal teaching experience, then evidence of teaching potential.

Short-listed candidates will be required to provide three confidential letters of reference and their law and graduate school transcripts.

About the Faculty of Law

The University of Calgary Faculty of Law offers a JD, thesis and course-based LLMs, and a PhD in law. The Faculty of Law also has a post-graduate Certificate in the area of Natural Resources, Energy and Environmental Law (NREEL) and several joint degree programs.
