Architectural Historian

Idaho National Laboratory is hiring an Architectural Historian (Project Hire) to work on our Environmental Safety Health and Quality team. Our team works a 9×80 schedule located out of our Idaho Falls facility with every other Friday off.

position Overview:

The Architectural Historian is responsible for managing and evaluating historic properties, objects, and landscapes within the built environment of the Idaho National Laboratory (INL). This includes ensuring compliance with the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA), preserving INL’s historic record through oral history and heritage documentation, and supporting the INL mission through expert cultural resource management.

The position requires regular collaboration with a multidisciplinary team of archaeologists, architectural historians, archivists, environmental staff, scientists, engineers, and project managers, as well as communication with external customers and stakeholders. Work is conducted under general direction with considerable autonomy, requiring strong judgment, problem-solving skills, and the ability to handle complex projects with diverse scopes.

Responsibilities:

• Serve as Principal Investigator (PI) for CRMO projects involving INL historic properties in the built environment.
• Prepare NHPA Section 106 and Section 110 compliance as it pertains to the built environment and historic land use, including preparing technical documentation such as resource records, monitoring forms, property evaluations, and compliance recommendations.
• Conducts Section 106 reviews and completes required documentation within the Environmental Review Process (ERP) system, Cultural Resource Database, and ICRIS. Supports work to satisfy requirements of Contract Data Requirements List (CDRLs). Apply knowledge of federal and state laws, DOE orders, and professional standards to a wide range of historic property issues.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

• Comprehensive understanding of laws, regulations, policies, and guidelines regarding the preservation and protection of cultural resources.
• Conduct intensive and reconnaissance surveys in the built environment.
• Produce written historic contexts, reports, and documentation on cultural, scientific, and land-use history at INL.
• Maintain project documentation, cultural resource files, and geospatial/electronic databases.
  * Lead or contribute to long-term strategies for built environment resources (e.g., EBR I Preservation Plan, inventory updates, long-term display of historic objects, Section 110 preservation issues).
• Provide solutions to complex project issues and represent CRMO expertise to internal and external customers.
• Complete tasks and assignments on schedule.
• Maintain high work quality and adhere to safety, security, and compliance requirements.
• Strong organizational, written, and verbal communication skills.
• Valid driver’s license.
• Ability to pass an INL security review and obtain/maintain a DOE L clearance.

• Level 2: A master’s degree in architecture history, historic preservation, history or related field.

• Level 3: A master’s degree in architecture history, historic preservation, history or related field and (2) years of relevant experience.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, Education:

• A master’s degree in architecture history, historic preservation, history or related field and a minimum of 4 years of relevant experience.

Physical Requirements:

• While performing the duties of this classification, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, stoop, kneel, bend, use stairs, and work in an office and field environment. The job requires hand/finger dexterity to keyboard or type, handle materials, manipulate tools, and reach with hands and arms. The job requires operation of job-related equipment and driving a vehicle, including a 4-wheel drive. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Sufficient visual acuity and hearing capacity to perform the essential functions and interact with people is required. Job Information:

• The pay range for this position is: Level 2 ($79,344 – $162,732) / Level 3 ($95,256 – $195,288). At Idaho National Laboratory compensation decisions are determined using factors such as education, relevant experience, and other credentials.

• Multi-Level: This is a multi-level posting and you will be placed at the appropriate level dependent on depth and breadth of proven experience and skills.
