The University of Virginia Facilities Management is seeking an Arborist within the Facilities Management Landscape Services Department.

Arborists provide expertise with regards to the overall health of the University’s trees and for the safety of the people and property around them. They will perform many of the duties associated with the role themselves but will also manage the support provided by hired tree-care contractors as well as the department’s own grounds maintenance staff with all work done in accordance with the ANSI A300 standards. Additionally, they will develop and sustain positive working relationships with co-workers, supervisors, customers and the University community, able to work independently as well as to serve as a leader of teams. They demonstrate tactful and positive in-person and written communication skills, as well as advanced skills with computer, tablet, and/or smart phone usage to independently navigate essential UVA systems and email.

The University has been recognized by multiple sources over the years as one of the most beautiful college campuses in the United States. More recently the University has been designated by The Arbor Day Foundation as a “Tree Campus” which speaks to the commitment of the Landscape Department and the University for maintaining the health of our trees. In addition, the University has received the designation of being a Bee Campus, again speaking to our dedication to supporting the pollinator insect population on Grounds. We are seeking an Arborist who wishes to be part of this team tasked with maintaining the exterior environment that is the Grounds of the University of Virginia.

Facilities Management (FM) supports the University of Virginia’s wide range of research, academic and patient care programs. With over 1,200 employees dedicated to excellence, Facilities Management is responsible for the day-to-day operation, repair and maintenance of UVA’s buildings, infrastructure and grounds as well as other University-owned and leased properties.

Duties include:

  • Assess and determine the needs, risks, and health issues with regards to the University’s trees

  • Take the necessary steps to ensure that identified issues are alleviated with safety being the primary consideration. May include but not limited to pruning, cabling, fertilization, pest control, full removals

  • Advise area Supervisors regarding actions necessary for the health of the trees within their zones.

  • Provide directions to and guide staff in completion of special projects.

  • Proper operation of all arborist tools to include but not limited to chain saws, chippers, hand saws, pole saws, pruners, climbing harnesses, ropes, throw bags, etc.

  • Maintain computer-based inventory used in tracking the status of the University trees and the work performed on them

  • In addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties may be assigned.

Required Qualifications:

  • education:High School Degree or GED required.

  • experience: Minimum of 5 years of experience.

  • Licensure: Valid Driver’s License with a zero or positive points balance plus at least 2 years of driving experience; International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) certification must be obtained within 6 months of hire

  • Skills: Proficient in computer skills related to emails, spreadsheets, presentations, and scheduling.

Anticipated Compensation: $25.00-$30.00/hour ($52k – $62,400 annually) commensurate with candidate qualifications and experience. This is a full-time position with UVA benefits.

Selected candidates will be required to complete all required background checks prior to the first day of employment. This position is based in Charlottesville, VA, and must be performed fully on-site.

Physical Demands: This job will require standing, traveling, and lifting above and below the waist various weights which may include different landscape equipment and materials. The use of both hands and repetitive motion will be required while pruning, climbing, driving, and operating equipment. This position is exposed to varying temperatures due to outside work and to noise from working around and with machinery. Employees are potentially exposed to contaminants and chemicals due to the use of fuel and landscape fertilizers, etc.
