Responsibilities

Design

Implements known solutions to moderately complex technical and/or design challenges that may involve multiple technical variables (e.g., heat reduction, size, performance) and provides guidance to other team members.

Displays deep knowledge in a specific engineering domain and acquires advanced knowledge of industry trends, competitors’ products, the customer experience, security requirements, and advances in various engineering fields. Shares knowledge with others on their team.

Creates and executes on robust, scalable, secure, and extensible designs and/or verification plans for the electrical engineering aspects of moderately complex and well-defined products or features.

Reviews available supplier or partner products to make supplier or partner recommendations in support of product development, ensuring suppliers and partners adhere to strict security and governance standards.

Reads device specification sheets and interprets complex details required to design and test various hardware features.

Develops design documentation which could include drawings, specifications, schematics, or diagrams for products or features with some general guidance and feedback from other engineers.

Uses root cause analysis to identify complex problems or flaws that may affect a feature or product design change. Identifies possible solutions and brings them to the attention of other engineers or team leads.

Design / Testing and Verification

Participates in simulation of a moderately complex components or subassemblies to ensure design is robust and to virtually test hardware features under different environments and/or conditions, leveraging approved tools and including security monitoring to detect potential violations.

Reporting and Documentation

Follows established procedures to create detailed reports and functional specifications for a well-defined product or product feature, based on audits and information from product development and verification processes while adhering to security-first guidelines and procedures.

Documents complex details about materials, components, and/or functionality for a device via accepted release processes and highlights potential compatibility or security issues. Accurately records and tracks changes to designs following established processes with minimal guidance.

Technical Project Implementation

Communicates project progress/status within the project team and escalates issues as necessary.

Identifies opportunities to affect downstream execution of projects by identifying issues and suggesting design tradeoffs within scope (e.g., performance vs. reliability and manufacturing concerns).

Coordinates a project implementation schedule to deliver the hardware engineering aspects of a moderately complex feature or product. Escalates issues to management as necessary.

Researches new tools, technologies, or processes for project implementation and provides recommendations to project team members as to which tool is appropriate.

Testing and Verification

Writes design verification test cases using standard templates and test methodologies, or creating new templates.

Documents the appropriate test requirements and improvements to be included in relevant hardware designs by applying an understanding of how moderately complex features or products work under a variety of customer scenarios. Includes security logging and audits as part of test requirements.

Uses data and statistical analyses to identify complex problems or flaws that may affect a feature or product design change, and ensures data handling adheres to security best practices and regulations. Identifies possible solutions and brings them to the attention of other engineers or team leads.

Develops coverage and processes in the outsourced testing plans that defines the format of the content to be reported by the external testing supplier or partner.

Documents the appropriate test requirements and improvements to be included in relevant hardware designs by applying an understanding of how moderately complex features or products work under a variety of customer scenarios.

Determines whether current test equipment is suitable for measuring features of new product technology based on newly created or modified verification plans.

Designs and develops automated testing solutions. Independently conducts automated testing on moderately complex feature areas or products within a subsystem.

Develops, reviews, and executes test plans and/or infrastructure for moderately complex or small sized scope feature areas or products, including focusing on automatic detection of cyberthreats and robust remediation methods.

Develops elements of dashboards or reports for testing and quality metrics based on hardware characterization and performance data.

Develops basic test fixtures for use in testing or validation of new product features with minimal guidance.

Sets up and breaks down testing environment for other engineers. Follows safety guidelines.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

Master’s Degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related field AND 1+ year(s) technical engineering experience OR Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related field AND 2+ years technical engineering experience

OR equivalent experience.

Background Check Requirements:
Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings:
  • Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

Additional or preferred qualifications

Master’s Degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related field AND 3+ years technical engineering experience OR Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related field AND 5+ years technical engineering experience
OR equivalent experience.

Electrical Engineering IC3 – The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $100,600 – $199,000 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $131,400 – $215,400 per year.

Electrical Engineering IC4 – The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $119,800 – $234,700 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $158,400 – $258,000 per year.
