The Department of Earth and Environmental Science invites applications for two 24-month, contractually limited term (CLT) positions at the rank of Assistant Professor beginning July 1, 2026 and continuing to June 30, 2028. We are seeking candidates in the general fields of environmental geoscience, geology or Earth science.

Candidates should provide evidence of performance and potential as a teacher, which can include past teaching experience, demonstration of teaching effectiveness, examples of innovative approaches to teaching, supervision of students and ability and potential to participate in and contribute to the department’s programs. Courses taught may include (but are not limited to) Earth history, field geology, hydrogeology, geomorphology, environmental impact assessment, glacial geology, geophysics, geochemistry, economic geology, Geographic Information Systems, or environmental geoscience-related courses, and general science courses such as climate change, oceanography, natural disasters and atmosphere, weather and climate. The specific teaching responsibilities for each position will be decided with the successful candidates. Teaching experience in a mix of lecture, field and laboratory settings will be considered an asset.

Applicants should also show evidence of demonstrated or developing scholarly activity, including, but not limited to, research and publications. Applicants should have a demonstrated record of, or potential for, producing high quality peer-reviewed research in the broad fields of environmental geoscience, geology, Earth science and/or related topics. We are seeking candidates who will develop active research programs that are competitive for internal and external research funding. Research programs that include supervision and mentoring of honours students during this appointment and incorporating field-based and laboratory components as well as the ability and willingness to contribute to graduate student supervision and mentoring will be considered an asset.

The successful applicant will also contribute to the service activities of the department, and should indicate previous contributions to a department, faculty or university, including course and program development, as well as any contributions to the discipline or profession. Academic Qualifications:
Applicants must hold a PhD in Earth Science, Geology, Environmental Earth Science or related field at the time of appointment.

The Department of Earth and Environmental Science offers degrees in Geology, Environmental Geoscience and Environmental Science at the B.Sc. level, and Geology, Environmental Science and Applied Geomatics at the M.Sc. level. We are strongly committed to field and laboratory studies and our classes and field schools take advantage of the stunning natural setting of Nova Scotia. Small, personalized classes, engaged faculty and excellent research facilities are hallmarks of our department. We provide students with the knowledge and skills necessary to contribute to and become life-long learners in their fields. The department includes 7 professors and an instructor and approximately 100 undergraduate and 10 MSc graduate students. Research facilities at Acadia University include the Acadia Centre for Microstructural Analysis, an inter-disciplinary research facility including microscopic and analytical equipment, the Acadia Petrographic Laboratory which includes sample preparation facilities and an XRF research laboratory.

Specifically, the letter should clearly describe the applicant’s expertise and experience related to teaching and research. The letter should provide evidence of positive performance in teaching undergraduate Environmental Geoscience and Geology. The letter should also include evidence of the applicant’s experience in internal and external service activities, and their commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion;
• an up-to-date curriculum vitae listing all relevant experience and qualifications, including professional training or registration;
• proof of academic qualifications (i.e. a copy of the highest degree);
• any additional documents that would provide information on the factors outlined above;
• a teaching dossier demonstrating past experience and teaching approach (4 pages maximum);
• a research dossier demonstrating existing contributions and a plan for pursuing research at Acadia (4 pages maximum); and
• the names and email/phone contact information of three references at least one of whom can speak directly about the applicant’s teaching and research capabilities and experience (referees will be contacted soon after the closing date if the applicant is short-listed.)
