position SUMMARY:
The Environmental professional provides operations and technical expertise on transuranic (TRU) waste treatment, remediation, packaging, characterization, decontamination, and inventory control. Performs assessments of CH-TRU Waste Programs elements for compliance and quality.
426.2: This position is subject to DOE Order 426.2, Personnel Selection, Training, and Qualification Requirements for DOE Nuclear Facilities, which establishes entry-level requirements to ensure candidates selected for specific positions can successfully perform the requirements of the job
MAJOR DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
Include, but are not limited to:
- Communicates, interacts, and works with internal customers and with CH-TRU Management.
- Solves technical operational related issues with TRU waste remediation, packaging and storage, characterization, and overall efficient, safe, and compliant TRU waste processing.
- Reviews operational performance from a regulatory/safety standpoint and formally reports issues and/or recommendations.
- Presents solutions to problems regarding waste operations, inventory control and management, nuclear and industrial safety, and regulatory issues.
- Interfaces with TRU Program Production Control Manager in analyzing and interpreting inventory data for strategic and tactical planning and mission development.
- Conducts and prepares for various assessments which include: management self-assessments, independent assessments, event investigations and effectiveness assessments.
- Interacts with field coordinators to perform waste management activities in an efficient and quality manner.
- Interprets, recommends, and complies with environmental, health and safety regulations and/or company policies.
- Performs other duties as required.
- A bachelor’s degree in a closely related field. However, a combination of education and relevant experience wherein the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the position’s duties and responsibilities have been adequately demonstrated is acceptable.
- Level 3: Five (5) to Eight (8) years of hazardous waste/hazardous materials management. Per DOE O 426.2, this position requires one year of job related experience.
- Level 4: Nine (9) to Eleven (11) years of hazardous waste/hazardous materials management. Per DOE O 426.2, this position requires one year of job related experience.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES:
Level 3:
- Working knowledge and ability to develop and apply highly advanced principles, concepts and techniques of analysis and reporting.
- Working knowledge of applicable local, State, and Federal laws and regulations relating to the handling and management of waste.
- Working knowledge of Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) Waste Acceptance Criteria (WAC) and N3B waste management program operations.
- Ability to communicate effectively at the highest levels.
- Ability to have major impact on organizational success and productivity, with extensive latitude for independent judgment.
- Working knowledge of quality assurance practices and principles.
- Working knowledge of records management and processing.
- Ability to effectively convey thoughts clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing, to diverse audiences.
- Ability to impact organizational success and productivity, with latitude for independent judgment.
- Ability to meet the level of language skills, mathematical skills, communication skills, reasoning ability and computer skills necessary to perform essential functions of the job.
- Level 4:

BUSINESS ASSOCIATION:
LEVEL 3: Represents organization as a prime contact on contracts or projects. Interacts with senior internal and external personnel on significant matters often requiring coordination between organizations.
LEVEL 4: Serves as consultant to management and special external spokesperson for the organization on major matters pertaining to its policies, plans, and objectives.
IMPACT:
LEVEL 3: Exerts some influence on the overall objectives and long-range goals of the organization. Erroneous decisions or failure to achieve objectives would normally have serious effect upon the administration of the organization.
LEVEL 4: Effects of decisions are long-lasting and heavily influence the future course of the organization. Errors in judgment or failure to achieve results would result in the expenditure of large amounts of company resources.
WORKING CONDITIONS & PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Individuals must be able to perform the essential functions of the job with or without a reasonable accommodation.
- This position works in an office environment with low noise level due mostly to office equipment and in the field with occasional exposure to loud sounds and distracting noise levels.
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, walk, stand, and occasionally climb or balance, squat, stoop, twist, turn, push, pull, kneel, crouch, crawl, and reach with hands and arms.
- This position frequently must lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and infrequently must lift and/or move up to 20 pounds.
- Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
- Hearing requirements include ability to listen and respond appropriately to conversations in person, virtually, and over the phone.
- Only electrical hazards and other minor potential hazards normally found in an office environment are anticipated.
- Field activities may require walking on uneven terrain and working in unfavorable weather conditions.
ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS:
- Maintains required safety, security and operational training; assure procedural and regulatory compliance; make safety, security and quality an integral part of every task; including stopping work if job is unsafe or compromises security.
- Must obtain an L level Department of Energy security clearance.
- This position will ensure all activities and operations are performed in a safe and deliberate manner to include protecting the confidentiality and integrity of Personally Identifiable Information (PII).
