North Wind Site Services is focused on providing engineering, program management, environmental remediation services including investigation and characterization, environmental restoration, unexploded ordnance/military munitions response (MMRP), regulatory public involvement services, environmental compliance, logistics, and records and facility management.
position PURPOSE:

The Environmental Scientist will provide support for our environmental investigation and remediation projects across the country. Primary responsibilities will be to support environmental projects at federal facilities across the country for Dept of Defense (DOD), US Corps of Engineers (USACE), and private sector customers. Must have experience with a variety soil/groundwater sampling techniques and CERCLA and RCRA remedial investigations/remedial actions. Candidate must be able to work independently as the lead scientist in the field at the project site. Candidate must have strong verbal skill to communicate with client and project stakeholders. Travel required 50-80%
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Collaborate with environmental scientists, planners, hazardous waste technicians, engineers, and other specialists to address environmental problems.
  • Ensure compliance with environmental regulations related to hazardous waste, universal waste, and used oil.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of Resource Conservation and Recovery Act permit requirements and compliance.
  • Review waste characterization data and apply EPA hazardous waste identification codes.
  • Prepare characterization and shipping documents in accordance with Dept. of Defense policies.
  • Conduct sampling of various environmental media and assist with data interpretation and reporting.
  • Communicate scientific and regulatory information to clients, peers, and other site personnel through oral briefings, written documents, and formal meetings.
  • Evaluate analytical laboratory data and draw conclusions and make recommendations.

ADDITIONAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Groundwater sampling using low flow technique,
  • Field oversight of subcontractors,
  • Drilling oversight,
  • Soil sampling (ISM and composite)
  • Field Team lead

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science or other relevant degree
  • 6-10 years of relevant experience

Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of waste characterization and hazardous waste determinations per EPA regulations
  • Knowledge of waste management operations including labeling and documentation procedures
  • Knowledge and experience with various media (e.g., soil, soil vapor, groundwater), contaminant types, and standard operating procedures for investigation and corrective action.
  • Demonstrated, substantial experience writing technical plans and reports for regulatory review.
  • High degree of sensitivity regarding confidential client and employee information.
  • Ability to work independently, as well as part of a team, and make decisions, solve problems, exercise good judgment, work under pressure, and capable of prioritizing workload.

Special Requirements:

  • HAZWOPER 40 Hr and 8-hour refresher
  • First Aid/CPR
  • Ability to drive a pickup or transit van
  • Travel up to 80%
  • Ability to pass U.S. Government employment background check and acquire U.S. Government Personal Identity Verification (PIV) credential card.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience working on projects for Department of Defense, Department of Energy, Environmental Protection Agency, or other federal agencies.
  • OSHA 30 hour

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, squat, climb and talk or hear. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. The employee is often required to use hands or fingers to handle or feel and reach with hands and arms.
WORKING ENVIRONMENT:

The work is conducted both indoors and outdoors. While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be exposed to outside weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is normally mild to moderate. The employee will be exposed to moving mechanical equipment, machinery, and vehicles. The employee must be able to stand for long periods and walk across uneven terrain.
