Course description

This course examines Chinese cultural traditions and values through contemporary media produced in China, Taiwan and Hong Kong. Background readings and literary works will provide students with the necessary historical and cultural context for each work. Class discussions will focus on the political, social and cultural transformations presented in the media. Special attention will be paid to topics such as family, class issues, gender and identity.

Sessional dates of appointment: January 1, 2025 to April 30, 2025

Salary:

Sessional Lecturer I – $9,457.90 inclusive of vacation pay (0.5 FCE)

Sessional Lecturer I Long Term – $9,930.79 inclusive of vacation pay (0.5 FCE)

Sessional Lecturer II – $10,121.77 inclusive of vacation pay (0.5 FCE)

Sessional Lecturer II Long Term – $10,326.62 inclusive of vacation pay (0.5 FCE)

Sessional Lecturer III – $10,362.76 inclusive of vacation pay (0.5 FCE)

Sessional Lecturer III Long Term – $10,570.02 inclusive of vacation pay (0.5 FCE)

Please note that should rates stipulated in the collective agreement vary from rates stated in this posting, the rates stated in the collective agreement shall prevail.

Minimum qualifications:

Ph.D. in Chinese literature or a related field is required.

Demonstrated knowledge in the area of Chinese literature and experience teaching university-level Chinese literature courses are required.

(Near-)native fluency in Mandarin Chinese is required.

Preferred qualifications:

Demonstrated excellence in teaching this course, or a similar course at the university level, is preferred.

Preference in hiring is given to qualified individuals advanced to the rank of Sessional Lecturer II and Sessional Lecturer III in accordance with Article 14:12.

Description of duties:

All normal duties related to the design and teaching of a University credit course, including preparation and delivery of course content; out-of-class interactions with students via e-mail and office hours; development, administration and marking of assignments,tests and exams; calculation and submission of grades; order all necessary readings.
