Purpose of this role
The Trusts & Foundations Advisor is co-responsible for implementing and realising the operational objectives of the Grants & Funding Partnerships team in order to create more funding for the work of Terre des Hommes Netherlands in line with the Resource Mobilisation Strategy 2024-2030.
The position requires an experienced Advisor with the creativity and communication skills to package our programs and technical expertise in ways that attract the right donors to grow our portfolio strategically and sustainably. The focus is on stewarding and growing existing funding partnerships with trusts and foundations in the Netherlands as well as with global and international operating foundations. We aim to position Terre des Hommes Netherlands as expert thought leader in child exploitation. This also involves influencing and raising awareness where foundations meet, listen and formulate their funding approach. The goal will be to build high value and multi year partnerships.
The Trusts & Foundations Advisor has experience and understands the dynamics of operating and implementing programs in different countries, preferably in East Asia and Africa. The Trusts & Foundations Advisor is responsible for building and optimising relationships and income from strategic (key) accounts with the aim of generating more income from a well balanced and healthy portfolio. Together with the team, set up and further develop an active program for scoping/prospecting, proposal development and grant management.
The Advisor has their own objectives, accounts and pipeline.
The team
Our team consists of 6 colleagues in The Netherlands focusing on fundraising from Institutional donors and Trusts & Foundations, both inside and outside the Netherlands.
The team is managed by the Manager Grants & Funding Partnerships and is part of the Resource Mobilisation department. The Trusts & Foundations Advisor has no direct reports.
We are a close, international (6 different nationalities) and ambitious team. We have team objectives combined with individual focus areas and we are always ready to work together and support one another. Teamplay, focus and critical thinking is what makes our team work so well. On Mondays we always come together for planning, evaluating, strategising and lunches.
Result areas and core activities
Your job is to shape and drive our strategy to deliver funding over the next five years. To do this you will:
- Develop fundraising plans for new and existing donors within their portfolio.
- Spot and map fundraising opportunities and explore new markets worldwide.
- Networking; build and nurture relationships with active relations and prospective foundations, funds and trusts such as Flexiplan, Stichting 10 September and corporate foundations like Volkswagen. You will work collaboratively with various funders and partners in both The Netherlands and abroad.
- Manage the proposal development process and are responsible for writing the actual proposal.
- Act as account manager and oversee all requirements of the grant are met with the highest standards possible in close collaboration with the Grant Management Officer.
- Deliver and report on our fundraising strategy and develop tactical plans to ensure we achieve our target.
- Perform research on trends and developments relevant to successful fundraising.
- Secure our data, test and evaluate our materials, approach and systems to improve the fundraising request and our strategies.
- Work closely with colleagues across Terre des Hommes, including regional and country offices to identify new opportunities and ensure realistic and deliverable partnerships.
- Maintain the CRM system and follow up all platforms for engaging and reporting to donors.
Knowledge and experience
The ideal candidate will be committed to the mission and vision of Terre des Hommes and has a proven track record in fundraising. More specifically:
- Seasoned fundraising professional with 5-10 years of experience in a similar position, raising money for international development, human rights and/or governance causes.
- Successful fundraising of preferably six-figure, multi-year and higher grants from donors.
- Experience in donor mapping, proposal development and proposal writing.
- Experience with grant management of a developed donor portfolio.
- Stakeholder management and networking skills and the ability to develop strong relationships with colleagues, contacts and stakeholders built on trust and respect.
- Has an active network in the field of Trusts & Foundations.
- Able to see the ‘hidden lines’ in calls for proposal.
- A pro-active and hands-on.
- Good writing and presentation skills.
- Excellent interpersonal skills, emotional intelligence, ability to work independently and in a team.
- Able to deal with the pressure of short deadlines.
- Experience working with staff across different cultures and time zones.
- Background in both program development and fundraising would be an asset.
- Educated to Bachelor or Masters degree level or equivalent in International Development, Social studies, Business Studies or other relevant studies.
- Fluent in Dutch and English (verbal and written) is a must, French is an asset
- Agrees to international travel when needed

- A 1-year contract with the intention to extend to an indefinite contract after 1 year.
- The salary scale for this job is scale 10 and depending on experience and seniority the salary ranges between €3.737,77 and €4.821,39 gross per month based on a full time (36 hrs) contract
- We offer a 36 hour contract which in our organisation equals a full time workweek. The pro of this is that one can work 4 x 9 and have one day per week off while still having a full time contract. You may spread the hours over the week matching your preference, in agreement with your manager;
- We work hybrid, so 50% office and 50% from home. Very flexible and with a positive effect on your work life balance;

- 25 days of paid leave per year on a full time employment basis, if part time, days pro rata;
