A key element of this role is overseeing research and community engagement at our Whitefish Point Bird Observatory while managing a team of seasonal avian researchers (Piping Plover monitoring, raptor and waterbird counting, and owl banding). It is essential for this person to have extensive bird banding experience and to hold a master banding permit (or to meet all of the requirements for the permit). This role includes both time in the field and in the office.
Responsibilities:

- Oversee research projects, whether led internally or in support of collaborative partners. Seek grant funding to support efforts, developing and submitting contract/grant proposals. Ensure project results meet project goals, timelines, and budget.
- Oversee Whitefish Point Bird Observatory as a research and engagement center. Ensure research protocols are meeting best practices and are followed. Work with internal team on outreach efforts/events to grow membership and donation support. Develop plans for maintenance of physical structures and ensure efforts are completed. Engage with local partners to build relationships and collaborations.
- Recruit, supervise, develop, and direct research staff.
- Analyze data, write reports, publish data, and present findings to key stakeholders.
- Work with internal team to connect research to conservation plans and bird-specific programs.
- Represent organization on esteemed avian-related committees.
- Enhance efforts and outcomes of community science avian research.
Qualifications:
- Hold a master banding permit or meet all permit requirements.
- Graduate degree in relevant field to the position, with thesis experience (PhD preferred).
- 4-6 years of post-graduate experience that includes project and staff management.
- Experience in staff recruitment, current hiring practices, managing, and developing a staff team.
- Strong ability to lead projects, working both independently and on a team.
- Ability to think creatively about new research questions.
- Strong skills in team leadership, partnership development, relationship building, administration, and organization.
- Experience developing budgets for large-scale projects and ensuring work is completed on time and within budget constraints.
- Ability to communicate effectively both in person and in writing. Candidates may be expected to demonstrate their proficiency in these skills during the interview process.
- Interest in helping Michigan Audubon meet its mission of connecting birds and people for the betterment of both and fulfilling its strategic goals regarding research.
- Experience in the statistical analysis and presentation of data.
- Experience with grant writing and being awarded grants.
- Comfortable with a mix of travel, fieldwork, and office work.
- Proficient in GIS programs, R or other statical analysis programs.
- Physically able to work long hours, work outdoors in the elements, and perform efforts such as hikes and moving equipment.
