Lake Protection Project Manager

The Lake George Association (LGA) is a non-profit organization dedicated to the protection and preservation of the pristine waters and natural resources of Lake George. Established in 1885, LGA has been at the forefront of environmental protection initiatives, education, and advocacy to ensure the long-term health and sustainability of The Queen of American Lakes.

Position Description: The LGA is seeking a qualified and passionate Project Manager to further its mission to protect the water quality of Lake George. This role involves working closely with our Waterkeeper, Water Quality Research Manager, and other team members to address stormwater and pollution issues primarily through site visits, utilizing our app (Survey123), and GIS tools. This position offers an exciting opportunity to make a meaningful impact on water quality and environmental resource conservation efforts within the Lake George basin. The successful candidate will have the chance to work on exciting projects, collaborate with a diverse team, and contribute to the sustainable management of our water resources. The ideal candidate will have a background in engineering/engineering technician, land use, or environmental resource management, with 3 years of relevant experience, and a passion for environmental protection.

Responsibilities:

Project Management:

• Act as project manager on specific programs, including coordinating schedules, managing resources and grants, and ensuring projects are completed on time and within budget.
• Serve as an expert and coordinator in cross-organizational stormwater and wastewater mitigation projects.
• Work with the Lake George Waterkeeper, Managing Program Director, Jefferson Project, and other program partners and contractors on projects that assess issues/water quality impacts affecting Lake George, including all aspects of project development and implementation.

Lake Protector App and Site Visits:

• Conduct site visits to assess stormwater and pollution issues on properties, provide recommendations for mitigation, and assist property owners in implementing solutions.
• Collect and visualize data related to stormwater and pollution issues and mitigation efforts.
• Use our custom Lake Protector App (Drupal) and site visit tool (Survey123) to effectively communicate recommended work with constituents.
• Work with our tech team to develop and test new app features.

Support for the Waterkeeper:

• Collaborate with the Waterkeeper in reviewing land use/permitting applications, engaging with stakeholders, and promoting the mission of our organization.
• Assist in advocacy efforts and outreach activities to support water quality initiatives.
• Support Waterkeeper programs with salt, invasive species, and HABs as needed.

GIS:

• Produce maps using GIS for educational and fundraising events, showcasing the impact of our projects and raising awareness about water quality, stormwater management and natural resource protection.
• Utilize GIS mapping software to help evaluate research projects and findings relating to wastewater treatment and associated groundwater seepage into local tributaries.
• Apply GIS mapping software to assess and recommend improvements to existing policy and regulations for water quality and watershed protection.
• Additional mapping as needed for road salt reduction, land use planning, and water resources impacts.

Grant Writing and Management:

• Research grant opportunities, prepare grant proposals, and manage grant applications and reporting processes.
• Ensure compliance with grant requirements and deadlines, and effectively communicate the impact of funded projects to stakeholders and funders.

Field Work and Data Collection:

• Work with the Waterkeeper to monitor projects and gather data for future initiatives.
• Work with the Water Quality Research Manager to conduct field operations and collect data related to the various projects ongoing in the Lake George Basin. This may involve water quality testing, data collection, and documentation.

Communication and Public Speaking:

• Communicate outcomes of projects in meetings of public officials and policymakers, partners and collaborators, public forums, and group presentations.

Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college with a major in engineering/engineering technician, land use planning or natural resource management. Master’s degree is a plus.
• At least 3 years of relevant job experience
• Proficiency in ArcGIS software and Survey123 is required. Knowledge of stormwater design software is encouraged.
• Strong understanding and experience in stormwater management, concepts, and design with on-site experience.
• Experience with wastewater systems, including sewer treatment plants and septic systems.
• Ability to work with large datasets.
• Rigorous attention to detail, being a self-starter, collaboration, and public speaking skills, and a commitment to achieving program goals and objectives.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills—both written and verbal—with the ability to effectively interact with property owners, team members, and board members.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
• Ability to lift and move field equipment.
• Experience with boat operation/navigation and strong swimming skills a plus.
