We are seeking a highly motivated, enthusiastic individual wishing to excel in both their clinical and academic training, with the ambition to join the next generation of leading clinical academics.You will spend 50% of your time undertaking specialist clinical training and 50% undertaking research or education/training. This is a fixed term post for 4 years or until CCT/CCST is reached, whichever is sooner. Successful exit from the programme will leave you well-placed to apply for competitive research fellowships, academic senior lectureships and to continue to work in the global health research community. The Postgraduate Dean has confirmed that this post has the required educational and staffing approval and will come with an Academic National Training Number [NTN(A)]. The salary will be at the clinical scale, depending on qualifications and experience.The ACL will have regular supervision meetings with their clinical academic supervisor. The ACL will spend 50% of their time in full-time academic activity each year, to enable them to complete an intense period of research or educational activity to support grant application. They will establish an independent research portfolio, by applying successfully for external grants, publishing in peer review journals and disseminating results at national and international conferences.In addition, the ACL will work collaboratively with colleagues to build a strong research portfolio in WMS, UHCW and the wider University. They will be expected to be actively involved in the postgraduate teaching programme and contribute to the supervision of Academic Clinical Fellows and PhD students; providing academic mentoring and advice for colleagues working in the NHS.The successful candidate will be employed by the University of Warwick and hold Honorary Contracts with the University Hospital of Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Trust (UHCW) or other NHS Trust relevant to their training needs.About YouApplicants should be medically qualified, ST3 and above, have full GMC registration and already hold, or have submitted for Higher Degree (PhD/DPhil/MD).You will have evidence of academic achievement, with publications in your field, and will already hold an NTN, having undertaken some training at Specialty Registrar level.The post is ideally suited to individuals wishing to build an academic career, and in particular those who have already undertaken research and who now wish to continue undertaking research whilst pursuing further training.For further information regarding the skills required for this role please see the personal specification section of the attached job description.About the DepartmentWarwick Medical School is the home of the world-leading centre for mechanochemical cell biology which examines mechanobiology functions and their contribution to human pathologies. The department of Cardiology has expanded rapidly and is one of the busiest centres in the West Midlands region, performing complex pacing, PCI, TAVI, cardiac surgery and heart failure management.The department is research active with an established record of PhD and research supervison and active collaboration both nationally (e.g. Bart’s) and internationally (e.g. the Henri Mondor Hospital, Paris, and the University of Washington, Seattle). Research interests focus on improving the understanding and management of heart rhythm disorders (Ventricular Tachycardia) including mapping, ablation, and holistic care, and the spectrum of research ranges from ion channel, cellular, animal model, human tissue assays, computational modelling and technology appraisal.Established research partnerships are in place with industry including Medtronic, Cardiac Precision, Biosense Webster, and Abbott Medical which also provide excellent training opportunities and early access to new technologies.The institute for cardio-metabolic medicine is one of four institutes of research excellence established at UHCW with the aim of nurturing a new generation of scientists and transforming understanding and treatment of cardiovascular, metabolic diseases, and cardiology including cardiac arrhythmias, heart failure and obesity.Obstetrics and GynaecologyThis is an opportunity to be part of the Tommy’s National Centre for Miscarriage research and The Centre for Early Life in which we excel in translational research into implantation and miscarriage (Brosens/Quenby), preterm labour (Blanks/Quenby), endometriosis (Greaves) and embryology (Hartshorne/MacAinsh).
